Been reading on the Kindle for awhile so I‘m gonna get back on my Nook and read some of the books I never got around to before. #15of2024

This is a weird self-help book masquerading as a novel. It wasn't what I expected. No idea what I expected. The title in English is Your Second Life Begins When You Realize You Only Have One. I'm actually surprised this was translated to English and that they kept that long title.

This was pretty superficial but made me happy and thoughtful every time I picked it up. Need to put all these life lessons into practice. Glad I read it.

Nute There is already a wise observation in the title of this book!🤔 3y

"You're probably suffering from a type of acute routinitis. [...] It's an emotional disorder that is starting to affect more and more people, especially in the West. The symptoms are nearly always the same: lack of motivation, chronic despondency, loss of direction and meaning in life, finding it hard to feel happy despite an abundance of material wealth, a feeling of disillusionment and lethargy, amongst other things."

Distributing self-help advice via fictional novel is an interesting approach. Claude is a life coach with a striking resemblance to Sean Connery guiding Camille out of ‘routinitis‘. My favorite piece of advice (excepting the title), ‘Get off your cross. We need the wood.‘

Pic: Since this book was translated from French the poodle seemed appropriate.

I can see why this is popular, like shades of gray for sex. The Middle Aged woman is bored with her middle classed life. This is a self help guide disguised as a novel. The techniques are real cognitive therapy ones. I thought the husband was having an affair, not afraid of not being good enough for his improved wife.

This novel manages to be a light read (I wish there was more about the MC‘s parents, for example) while seriously tackling common self-help topics and phrases (i.e. setting “ SMART goalsâ€). The cover blurb says it‘s a best seller in France. In between pick and so-so. Cozying up today— yesterday and today were/are snow days from school but it‘s raining now — I‘m not going out to shovel in that! See my new floor lamp 😄? From IKEA.

"While not being clinically depressed, one could still have a feeling of emptiness and unease and suffer from the unpleasant sensation that although you had everything you needed to be happy, you didn‘t have the key to make the most of it."

"As for what gives life meaning, it now seemed to me that it involved getting to know how to give the best of yourself based on the qualities that made up your true identity."

AutumnRLS A sweet little book. I kept anticipating it would become something other than what it was, but in the end what it was was enough. 6y
