Desolation Canyon
Desolation Canyon: A Mystery | P. J. Tracy
6 posts | 4 read
P.J. Tracy seems to have found her literary sweet spot (New York Times Book Review) with her dazzling new series, and in Desolation Canyon, fans get a deeper look into the complex characters who call Los Angeles home. LAPD Detective Margaret Nolan is struggling to move forward after the death of her brother in Afghanistan and taking a life in the line of duty. Her stoic parents offer little support they refuse to address anything difficult, and shes afraid their relationship is eroding beyond the point of recovery. The days off are the hardest, because they give Margaret time to think. A moment of weakness leads to cocktails with a colleaguean attraction she knows could be dangerous at the luxurious Hotel Bel-Air bar. A stroll through the grounds leads to a grim discovery beneath the surface of Swan Lake: the body of a successful attorney who made his fortune in international trade. It initially appears to be death by misadventure, but the case is anything but straightforward. As a series of shocking revelations emerge, Nolan finds herself confronting a sinister cabal that just might destroy her and everyone she loves.

I wanted to love this book but I didn‘t. Tracy writes the Monkeewrench series, which is great, but I had to force myself to finish this one. A lot of characters that I didn‘t really know where they came from or what their motives were and was a little all over the place.

I liked this one better than the first. After the shooting in the last novel, Detective Margaret Nolan is taking some time off. She decides to meet another Detective for drinks at the Bel-Air Hotel. They decide to take a stroll through the grounds and come upon a grim discovery in Swan Lake. It appears to be a straight forward case, but that soon changes.

Book 5 for #Scarathlon and #20in4 is done! 3 more hours read, but I‘ll calculate all the Readathon points either weekly, or all together at the end of the month!

This book will count for 2 #dailyphotochallenges read for #OrangeCover (30 points). I found 225 words, so 2,250 points making this worth 2296 pts!

LAPD Detective Margaret Nolan is struggling to move forward after the death of her brother in Afghanistan. Her mother is also having a hard time & Margaret is afraid her parent's relationship is falling apart. Margaret goes to the Hotel Bel-Air for cocktails with a colleague & while there they discover a body in the lake on the grounds of the hotel. Nolan soon finds herself investigating a cabal that might just destroy her and everyone she loves.

EadieB This is the 2nd book in Tracy's new series and it got off to a slow start. It wasn't until the last third of the book that it finally took off. I actually liked the first book better than this one. Hopefully, the next book will hold my interest more or I will have to give up on this series. I loved the Monkeewrench series with it's humor which this one seems to be missing. Thanks to NetGalley and Minotaur books for an ebook. 3y
