How Civil Wars Start
How Civil Wars Start: And How to Stop Them | Barbara F. Walter
38 posts | 10 read | 7 to read
NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER A leading political scientist examines the dramatic rise in violent extremism around the globe and sounds the alarm on the increasing likelihood of a second civil war in the United States Like those who spoke up clearly about the dangers of global warming decades ago, Walter delivers a grave message that we ignore at our peril.David Remnick, The New Yorker Political violence rips apart several towns in southwest Texas. A far-right militia plots to kidnap the governor of Michigan and try her for treason. An armed mob of Trump supporters and conspiracy theorists storms the U.S. Capitol. Are these isolated incidents? Or is this the start of something bigger? Barbara F. Walter has spent her career studying civil conflict in places like Iraq and Sri Lanka, but now she has become increasingly worried about her own country. Perhaps surprisingly, both autocracies and healthy democracies are largely immune from civil war; its the countries in the middle ground that are most vulnerable. And this is where more and more countries, including the United States, are finding themselves today. Over the last two decades, the number of active civil wars around the world has almost doubled. Walter reveals the warning signswhere wars tend to start, who initiates them, what triggers themand why some countries tip over into conflict while others remain stable. Drawing on the latest international research and lessons from over twenty countries, Walter identifies the crucial risk factors, from democratic backsliding to factionalization and the politics of resentment. A civil war today wont look like America in the 1860s, Russia in the 1920s, or Spain in the 1930s. It will begin with sporadic acts of violence and terror, accelerated by social media. It will sneak up on us and leave us wondering how we could have been so blind. In this urgent and insightful book, Walter redefines civil war for a new age, providing the framework we need to confront the danger we now faceand the knowledge to stop it before its too late. Praise for How Civil Wars Start It turns out that there is a discipline that you might call civilwarologythe study of the factors that lead to civil war. . . . Barbara F. Walter became a civilwarologist nearly a quarter of a century ago and her entry is evidently well-thumbed in the Rolodexes of the CIA and the U.S. State Department. In other words, she knows what shes talking aboutwhich makes this book rather scary. The Times (U.K.)

From an authority on how Civil Wars have erupted around the world. Breaking down the erosion of democracy that precedes Civil unrest, we see that America and many Western Democracies are close to descending into Civil War. Social media has accelerated the process as have the recent changes in America to our voting rights.

Important read. I highlighted a lot. Like A LOT a lot! The contents match the title. Most chapters focus on how civil wars begin, and the last chapter puts forth ideas on how to stop them. No groundbreaking ideas in that last chapter. The test will be if Americans decide to protect democracy and put those ideas into place.

Sadly, I believe the coming together of Americans *only* occurs when disaster strikes. The rugged individualism “pull yourself up by your bootstraps” mentality is just too pervasive. Too much of “What‘s in it for me?” rather than asking “What do we owe one another?”

I‘ve been picking this book up for the past few days. Even though it‘s covering events I‘m familiar with, I keep getting tenser and tenser with this reframing. I‘m 21% through, and I‘d like to finish it to meet my 2022 reading goal. Looks like tonight and tomorrow I‘ll be all 😦😬😳

Day 3 of #snowpocalypse on Vancouver Island❄️ Today I‘m thankful for a full pantry, and plenty of meals cooked in previous weeks that I froze. Makes for the perfect excuse to snuggle up, enjoy the view, and read. Looks like I‘ll be hitting my 2022 Reading Goal🥰

Dragon Sorry I ever complained about rainy winters 🤣 1y
DogMomIrene @Dragon Yeah, but I get that. I lived in Memphis for years and winters there were always rainy, so rarely snow, but sometimes ice😵‍💫 We live on a pretty steep hill here, so I‘m not driving anywhere until this clears. And I‘m really okay with that. It‘s definitely pretty! 1y
dabbe Absolutely beautiful. Glad you're safe and snuggled in! 1y
Dragon Smart move @DogMomIrene I took a quick trip to the Uptown mall now I‘m going to hunker down and read/listen to my books ❄️. 1y

By "faction," they are referring to political parties that are based on ethnic, religious, or racial identity rather than ideology. Two variables--anocracy and factionalism--predicted better than anything else where civil wars are likely to break out. For a definition of what an anocracy is, see my previous post on this book.

This is according to a task force known as The Political Instability Task Force, a model that was created elsewhere but is used by the CIA. This is very disturbing when you consider the fact that the United States is now an anocracy with democratic features.

This sobering & highly readable book outlines the factors that have given rise to sectarian violence & civil war in places like Bosnia, Burma and Rwanda, most notably the emergence of factions based on identity & the perception of an existential threat. The author explores the increasing risk of political violence in the US, & what steps can be taken now to limit that risk before it's too late. A must read for anyone who wants a peaceful future.

One of a slew of books that have come out drawing parallels with events leading up to civil war in other countries to events and general societal norms here. The parallels are intriguing and interesting, But, I don‘t buy it. Americans still have it very good. Many of us don‘t get along and there are extremists that may act up. The majority, however, don‘t have the desire to harm their neighbor because they disagree. Fortunately.

Incredibly honest, terrifying, and hopeful all at the same time. Took a break from fiction lately, and boy, this was a reality check. It reminded me of how wide the world is and how much we have in common. Here‘s to always asking questions and finding some answers.

This is an excellent history lesson of conflicts around the world, their causes, the buildups, and the effects of civil wars. Other than being terrifying and disappointing that so many people use power to make the lives of others hell, I learned a lot about the evolution of democracy and authoritarian governments. It‘s not uplifting reading, but readable and thought provoking.
