By Her Own Design
By Her Own Design: A Novel of Ann Lowe, Fashion Designer to the Social Register | Piper Huguley
6 posts | 5 read | 3 to read
The incredible untold story of how Ann Lowe, a Black woman and granddaughter of slaves, rose above personal struggles and racial prejudice to design and create one of America's most famous wedding dresses of all time for Jackie Kennedy. 1953, New York City Less than a week before the society wedding of the year where Jacqueline Bouvier will marry John F. Kennedy, Jr, a pipe bursts at Ann Lowe's dress shop and ruins eleven dresses, including the expensive wedding dress, a dress that will be judged by thousands. A Black designer who has fought every step of the way, Ann knows this is only one struggle after a lifetime of them. She and her seamstresses will find the way to re-create the dresses. It may take all day and all night for the next week to accomplish the task, but they will do it. 1918, Tampa Raised in Jim Crow Alabama, Ann learned the art of sewing from her mother and her grandmother, a former slave, who are the most talented seamstresses in the state. After Ann elopes at twelve with an older man who soon proves himself to be an abusive alcoholic, her dreams of becoming a celebrated designer seem to be put on hold. But then a wealthy Tampa socialite sees Ann's talent and offers her an amazing opportunity--the chance to sew and design clothing for Florida's society elite. Taking her young son in the middle of the night, Ann escapes her husband and embarks on the adventure of a lifetime. Based on the true story of one of the most famous designers of the twenties through the sixties who has since been unjustly forgotten, By Her Own Design is an unforgettable novel of determination despite countless obstacles and a triumph celebrated by the world.

An important record of designer Ann Lowe's struggles and successes. I would have appreciated more detailed description of some of her designs, but it did introduce me to her and has taken me down the research rabbit hole with some interesting youtube videos. Would love to see the exhibit in DC. Pic of my recent #bookhaul from Foley, AL Book Exchange.

#adventrecommends

I read this last month for my IRL book club and I was surprised by the life story of the African American fashion designer who designed Jackie Kennedy‘s wedding gown. I thought the writing was too simplistic, I wanted more information but this is history that should not be forgotten but discovered and shared.

My next invention- (previously I thought of what‘s now whispersync- switching from ebook to audiobook - although there weren‘t ebooks when I thought of it!) - I want to be able to search back on what I‘ve listened to - like you can search words on an ebook. Today, I want to go back and listen to a section in this audiobook, but don‘t want to spend the time searching for it and unfortunately the ebook is not available at the library.

AnnR I'm not sure what app you're using for your library so maybe this doesn't apply, but Overdrive/Libby has a bookmark function. Of course, half the time I don't even think to bookmark a section of audio 🙄 so that doesn't help much. So you're right, having a word search function would be really helpful. That's part of the reason I like ebooks. 1y
tpixie @Ann_Reads yes I like the bookmarks!! But there‘s a section that I didn‘t bookmark that I wish I could find again without a lot of effort 🤪 yes the word search and the dictionary/ wiki/ translation is so great for ebooks! 1y

Mehso-so

Goodreads gushed about this but I didn't love it. Ann's story was interesting (if, at times, horrifying- married at 12!) but I wasn't impressed w the writing. Ann's voice in this, esp her incessant descriptions of how small & tiny & little & birdlike she was, irritated me & overshadowed her truly interesting life. I kinda wish I had read a much shorter biography of her as I was interested in the facts but could've done without Ann's fictional POV.

I don't quite know why it bothers me so much but I'm starting to get annoyed at how often this character refers to herself as bird-like.

Texreader Oh that would unnerve me !! 2y
Aims42 Lol, I noticed it too!! It‘s funny to see this graphic 😆 2y
bookandbedandtea @Texreader @Aims42 I want to let the author know I can remember a description from one page to the next! 😄🙄 2y

tpixie I‘ve just started this and noticed this as well!! Her editor was asleep!! 1y
bookandbedandtea @tpixie the editor definitely dropped the ball! I really wanted to like this book but it just didn't do it for me. Which is a shame because the facts of her life were interesting! But the "voice" the author gave her frustrated me. 1y
tpixie @bookandbedandtea I understand. I‘m finishing it up now- about 40 min left 1y

This was a GREAT read for history fans who love fashion. The author does such an amazing job of giving Ann Lowe a voice and telling her incredible story. Now that I‘ve finished the book I am ready to fall down the rabbit hole of learning more about Ann and seeing pictures of her incredible dresses. At times, it was not the easiest read but wow, what a life this woman lived!!

tpixie Great photo! I‘ve just started this. Married at 12 yo! Parts are hard to read! 1y
Aims42 @tpixie Thank you for the compliment ☺️ Yes, she lived such a hard life! Some of it was shocking to read for sure, but I‘m glad her story is being told finally ♥️ (edited) 1y
tpixie @Aims42 yes! So many stories of women need to be told! (edited) 1y
