I found Lee a bit much, if I‘m honest. Her savage determination to be a Cool Girl, and her pathological fear of infidelity, ruined not only her own life but also any chances I had of sympathising with her. That said, what will really sell Fool Me Once is the satisfying ending that promises a much brighter future than the voters of Texas are anticipating in reality. This was a fun rom com/chicklit type read. I just wasn't that invested in the characters and I didn't really click with them, would be the only reasons why I didn't rate it higher. This was a very different romantic comedy. Our FMC was incredibly unlikeable, like truly awful. I mean she cheats on the MMC (this is not a spoiler you find out very early in the book). Yet I kept listening to the book. I don‘t know if I completely buy the romance, but it was a fun read. I recommend if you like character journeys of learning to be more of an adult and understand how their past trauma impacts their relationships.⬇️

This whip-smart second chance romance reminds us we make mistakes, and we are still worthy of love. We can keep working hard to illuminate our dark spaces, show up for others, and believe in ourselves. Some parts were maybe a bit over the top, but it sparkles with chemistry, wit, and originality - my favorite romantic comedy I‘ve read in a long time. #authenticbooks

I‘m torn on this book. There were parts I really liked— the first chapter had me laughing out loud.

What annoyed me:
1) Political stereotype of conservatives as prejudiced, environment hating, awful humans.
2) Lee‘s friends and family taking her drug and alcohol abuse in stride.
3) Casual acceptance of infidelity.

I enjoyed Lee‘s growth in the story and liked her in the end, but 70% of the book I found her selfish, immature and judgmental.

When the first chapter has the main character doing the best walk of shame I‘ve ever read… running through a Disney park dressed as Belle to get back to her hotel room while families chase her 😂😂😂

I can tell already that this is going to be an entertaining read!

Winstead is so versatile! Her move from a dark thriller to romance was unexpected but entertaining and well-executed. I know when I pick up one of her books that I won't feel disappointed. In My Dreams I Hold a Knife was my favorite read of 2021, I prefer her psychological acuity in the thriller realm, but her romance was also shrewdly smart and enjoyable.
