A heartwarming and transporting romantic comedy about finding happy ever after on your own terms. Heir to his father's Mumbai business empire, Ved Mehra has money, looks, and status. He is also living as a closeted gay man. Thirty-eight, lonely, still reeling from a breakup, and under pressure from his exasperated mother, Ved agrees to an arranged marriage. He regrettably now faces a doomed future with the perfectly lovely Disha Kapoor. Then Ved's world is turned upside down when he meets Carlos Silva, an American on a business trip in India. As preparations for his wedding get into full swing, Ved finds himself drawn into a relationship he could never have imagined--and ready to take a bold step. Ved is ready to embrace who he is and declare his true feelings regardless of family expectations and staunch traditions. But with his engagement party just days away, and with so much at risk, Ved will have to fight for what he wants--if it's not too late to get it.

I liked this, but there were bits that make it a so-so for me.
Ved is a gay man in India, where it is illegal to be gay. He is pressured into an engagement just as he meets Carlos, who makes him feel happy again.

There was a lot of cheating, and guilt, and hypocrisy which is what knocked it down for me!

This was my #BookSpin and a goal for #20in4

As India approaches the decriminalisation of homosexuality, Ved Mehra, the closeted gay son of a millionaire businessman, finds himself under increasing pressure to get married as he approaches 40. He gets engaged to Disha, an eligible heiress found by his mother, but then meets the love of his life. 👎

Reggie I have this on kindle. I‘ll have to give it a try. 2y
Reggie Also, if you ever come across a movie called Fire, made in 1997, directed by Deepa Mehta, watch it. It‘s a love story that reflects one of India‘s mythological tales. It‘s wonderful and was way ahead of its time. 2y
rwmg @Reggie It sounds as if it could be angsty and depressing but the author keeps it light and fun. The ending does rather smack of hand-waving by the author rather than a genuine HEA, but that's only to say I would have just as happily read it if it had been half as long again. 2y

I found this on my kindle when my original #FoodandLit India book wasn‘t holding my attention. It was billed as a romantic comedy but I found the issues associated with being gay in India a bit deeper than the billing implied.

This was a decent story. Ved is being pressured into an arranged marriage by his family but hasn't told them that he is gay since it is still illegal in India. He enters an engagement to make them happy but then meets a man who he starts to fall for. The whole time Ved keeps saying how he's wrecked with guilt and is gonna finally come clean to everyone but then still doesn't, which was annoying.

Freebie from Amazon. I liked the premise of this book, but the writing was really lacking to me. It felt like I was reading an adult book with sentences for middle schoolers. I liked that this one exposed me to a different culture and was different than most books I usually read. Unfortunately though only 2⭐️.

10 out of 5 stars. Did not disappoint. It did however shock and awe me a little. And there were a few sniffles. Nice and sweet. *happy, contented sigh 😌*

I ate a passionfruit curd doughnut today and it was everything I dreamed it would be.

I‘m still finding my way into THE OTHER MAN, but my initial impression is that it starts in the wrong place. As of 14%, there‘s been a lot of backstory and scene setting. I hope it picks up soon. #gaymay

BkClubCare Passionfruit curd . . . Yowza!! 3y
xicanti @BkClubCare I dream of the day I get to eat it again. 3y

BkClubCare @xicanti - can‘t I just visit your town and enjoy such with you? 3y
xicanti @BkClubCare this is also a valid option. The doughnut store has HEAPS of other great flavours, too. 3y

For World Book Day Amazon has some eBooks for free as well as some discounted. This was one of the freebies, can't wait to get into it. My friend had trouble getting it to pull up with just the ten freebies but all I had to do was Google World Book Day. It goes s going on until the 27th.

#WorldBookDay

Fast, fun, free—hurray! This romcom is set in and written by an author from Mumbai. Though the background may be serious (homosexuality was illegal in India until fairly recently) the plot line is and characters are lovably sweet. Plus, the food descriptions made me hungry!

Free until 4/27 at https://www.amazon.com/article/read-the-world-2022

Graywacke Oh good. I picked up a free copy yesterday. 3y
