Marmee: A Novel | Sarah Miller
13 posts | 9 read | 14 to read
From the author of Caroline, a revealing retelling of Louisa May Alcotts beloved Little Women, from the perspective of Margaret Marmee March, about the larger real-world challenges behind the cozy domestic concerns cherished by generations of readers. In 1861, war is raging in the South, but in Concord, Massachusetts, Margaret March has her own battles to fight. With her husband serving as an army chaplain, the comfort and security of Margarets four daughters Meg, Jo, Beth, and Amynow rest on her shoulders alone. Money is tight and every month, her husband sends less and less of his salary with no explanation. Worst of all, Margaret harbors the secret that these financial hardships are largely her fault, thanks to a disastrous mistake made over a decade ago which wiped out her familys fortune and snatched away her daughters chances for the education they deserve. Yet even with all that weighs upon her, Margaret longs to do morefor the war effort, for the poor, for the cause of abolition, and most of all, for her daughters. Living by her watchwords, Hope and keep busy, she fills her days with humdrum charity work to keep her worries at bay. All of that is interrupted when Margaret receives a telegram from the War Department, summoning her to her husbands bedside in Washington, D.C. While she is away, her daughter Beth falls dangerously ill, forcing Margaret to confront the possibility that the price of her own generosity toward others may be her daughters life. A stunning portrait of the paragon of virtue known as Marmee, a wife left behind, a mother pushed to the brink, a woman with secrets.

I loved this. My sister has had metastatic breast cancer for 3+ years and had a not-so-great scan this month. I was definitely in the mood for sisterhood. I loved the life that Miller imagined for Margaret in and around the storyline of Little Women, adding in some of the truth of the time period (slavery, war, poverty, infant mortality, etc). Made me want to read an Alcott bio.

My October #bookspin. @TheAromaofBooks

Marmee‘s mantra to get herself through life is “Hope and keep busy.” By the novel‘s end,we see this mantra get her through her life‘s challenges. In this epistolary novel,we hear the story of Little Women from Marmee‘s point of view. While Civil War rages,Marmee is continuously engaged in her family‘s survival because Amos is sending little of his salary home.Unlike Amos, she struggles with the belief that God will provide.Consequently, her mission 🔽

kspenmoll 🔼 is to find ways provide food & goods She sews; she barters. With the help of her housekeeper & cook, more family that hired help, she accomplishes this. She shares what she can daily with those less fortunate than she, reminding herself often that her real wealth is her daughters. All the while she faces her life long struggle with her ferocious temper/temperament. (edited) 8mo

So much of this book, written as an epistolary novel, records events that are historically accurate. On this April day in 1867, a black man named Christopher Jones tried to board a street car. He was arrested. I had no idea there were numerous incidents of blacks organizing such events immediately after blacks were freed.https://www.zinnedproject.org/news/tdih/richmond-streetcar-protest/

I was nervous going into this as I love Little Women but it did not disappoint! It‘s a retelling from Marmee‘s PoV but it‘s also so much more than that. There‘s lots of history and the family‘s backstory (which is largely based on Louisa May Alcott‘s real life family history). It is fascinating and beautifully written. Defo one of my fav books of the year. ❄️ ❤️ 🌲

This book was a pleasant surprise. Borrowed this from my mother-in-law after she read and enjoyed it. I love Little Women and Miller clearly does as well. The entire novel is told through Margaret “Marmee” March‘s diary entries 1861-1868. Not so much a retelling as a complement to the original story. Oh, and how gorgeous are those endpapers?

Whether you've been a fan of Little Women for years or you're new to this delightful story, Marker is a wonderful read.

The perspective gives great insight into the original story, but it also feels like it's own story as well. All of the characters you love are present and seeing them through Marmee's eyes made me fall in love with all the girls all over again.

Just_reading Excellent review! I also loved this one! 2y

I really liked this take on Little Women! Marmee felt authentic without ever adding grittiness for the sake of "realism," and I appreciated her bravery and complexity. Superfans shouldn't be afraid! #historicalfiction
