A new edition of the well-loved classic story.Even before she came to Belton, Minty Cane had known that she was a witch, or something very like it...Minty is the kind of girl who notices things. Pockets of cold air on a stairway. Cries on the wind. Ghosts. On night-time jaunts from the house where she's staying while her mother recovers from an accident, Minty stumbles upon a moondial which takes her back in time. She finds Tom, a sickly kitchen boy, and Sarah, a girl with a birthmark who is only allowed out at night because her family think she has the mark of the devil...Can Minty save her friends, or will she get stuck in the past...?

Mehso-so

This just wasn‘t my sort of book. You can‘t help but like the main character Minty, but it just lacked something...I‘m not sure what....for me.

#AChildWithTheGhost

Araminta (Minty) is sent off to Belton House to spend the summer holidays with an elderly aunt... and begins to hear the mysterious voices of ghostly children, crying out from the past. 👻

I posted about this book a year ago but STILL haven‘t managed to find the 1980s BBC children‘s miniseries to watch. 😩

#NuYear

TrishB I think I remember this series! 6y
TrishB You can get the whole series on dvd on Amazon - not too expensive either 😁 6y
TobeyTheScavengerMonk Cool cover! Looks like it would have been my kind of jam as a kid. 6y

batsy I have a fondness for those Faber & Faber covers. With the "text box" titles on the top left like this one ? 6y

And I'm starting another old(er) British children's book. A young girl goes to spend the summer with her aunt at a National Trust house and discovers a moondial that allows her to travel back in time. (I just found out that there's a 1980s BBC series based on it!)

LeahBergen @rubyslippersreads Have you read this one? 7y
thegirlwiththelibrarybag I'm entranced by the cover! Excited to hear how you like it (might even track down a copy for myself) 7y
rockpools Squeeee moment here. 💕I loved the TV series- the idea of a moondial, the girl in the hood... And I had no idea it was Helen Cresswell - she wrote the Bagthorpes, which were very silly and my brother's favourite books growing up. 7y

thegirlwiththelibrarybag The new cover isn't as pretty but the used copies on eBay are about the same as a new copy from book depository 🤔 7y
LeahBergen @thegirlwiththelibrarybag I actually bought this one on Abe for cheap (and it's signed by the author!). Sometimes the old ones are the way to go. 😀 7y
tpixie Fun! 7y
thegirlwiththelibrarybag @LeahBergen, score! eBay ones are paperbacks of dubious quality.... 7y
