Joanna Ho, New York Times bestselling author of Eyes That Kiss in the Corners, has written an exquisite, heart-rending debut young adult novel that will inspire all to speak truth to power. Maybelline Chen isnt the Chinese Taiwanese American daughter her mother expects her to be. May prefers hoodies over dresses and wants to become a writer. When asked, her mom cant come up with one specific reason for why she's proud of her only daughter. Mays beloved brother, Danny, on the other hand, has just been admitted to Princeton. But Danny secretly struggles with depression, and when he dies by suicide, May's world is shattered. In the aftermath, racist accusations are hurled against May's parents for putting too much pressure on him. Mays father tells her to keep her head down. Instead, May challenges these ugly stereotypes through her writing. Yet the consequences of speaking out run much deeper than anyone could foresee. Who gets to tell our stories, and who gets silenced? Its up to May to take back the narrative. Joanna Ho masterfully explores timely themes of mental health, racism, and classism. "An ornately carved window into the core of shared humanity. Read and re-read. Then read it again." Nic Stone, New York Times bestselling author of Dear Martin "Powerful and piercing, filled with truth, love, and a heroine who takes back the narrative." Abigail Hing Wen, New York Times bestselling author of Loveboat, Taipei A held-breath of a novel that finds courage amidst brokenness, and holds a candle to the dark. Stacey Lee, New York Times bestselling author of The Downstairs Girl Ho confronts racism with care and nuance, capturing the complexities of grief and growth. A poignant call to action. “Some Asian boy got into Princeton and killed himself on the tracks,“ he said.

“Some Asian boy. A talking point- not a life, a person, a brother, a son worth honoring. Some Asian boy as if he didn't have friends and family sitting right there in the room.“

This is a young adult book that talks about very dark but real topics. If I were to implement this, it would be if I was a high school teacher and there was racial slurs or comments going around the school. Having young adults read the book, gives them a new perspective of how it actually affects students.

The Silence that Binds Us (2023) is a great contemporary realistic fiction for young adults. In this moving story, May goes through the struggles of grief from the loss of her brother from suicide to racism in the community. The book focuses primarily on racism and how it affects families and students in schools.

Such a beautiful book! May, a Chinese American teen, is completely shattered when her brother Danny takes his own life. Not only are her and her parents grieving, but a prominent community figure (a rich white dude) publicly accuses May‘s parents of putting too much “pressure” on Danny, thereby driving him to suicide. This sets off a chain of events and May has to decide whether to find her voice and fight back or to be silent. Highly recommend!
