The Cure for Sleep
The Cure for Sleep | Tanya Shadrick
4 posts | 1 read | 4 to read
Just days into motherhood, a woman begins dying. Fast and without warning. On return from near-death, Tanya Shadrick vows to stop sleepwalking through life. To take more risks, like the characters in the fairy tales she loved as a small girl, before loss and fear had her retreat into routine and daydreams. Around the care of young children, she starts to play with the shape and scale of her days: to stray from the path, get lost in the woods, make bargains with strangers. As she moves beyond her respectable roles as worker, wife and mother in a small town, Tanya learns what it takes - and costs - to break the spell of longing for love, approval, safety, rescue.

My #WordOfTheYear for 2023 is “touchdown.” It was inspired by an episode of Katherine May‘s “Wintering” podcast (retitled “How We Live Now”), in which she interviews writer Tanya Shadrick. As a non sports fan, it‘s a curious choice for me…but multiple meanings abound.

I may be starting an online blog in the New Year (as early as tomorrow!). The outline for my first journal entry, which exists in my brain & nowhere else, is about exactly this.

monalyisha @MoonWitch I was happy to see your post. This practice has been on my mind, as well. ✨ 1y

Pickpick

It took a while to warm up to this but I loved the latter parts where she details how she started to take risks in life. Tanya has a near death experience after becoming a mother & I thought it was to be a book on motherhood but it was the opposite-she barely writes about being a parent, but about her life away from that; her creative, artistic life. Poetically written but this made me feel disconnected from it at times. An inspiring read though.

Just me and Naomi today so I can read while she sleeps 💕

I‘m liking this book but at the same time it feels like it‘s taking a while to get going. I do sometimes find that with memoirs though.

Both kids have napped together for 3 days in a row 🤯 priority is obviously reading over housework 😂

squirrelbrain That‘s very lucky! Of course, reading is *far* more important! 2y
merelybookish 💯 Gotta make hay while the sun shines! 2y

Liz_M House work makes noise which would disturb the nap. Only a silent activity, like reading, can be done. 😁 2y
