Takeaway: Stories from a Childhood Behind the Counter | Angela Hui
3 posts | 2 read | 11 to read
'A beautiful book: compellingly written, tender and thoughtful' Ruby Tadoh 'A warm, incandescent memoir about identity, food, family, relationships' Annie Lord 'The type of book that I would buy for friends on repeat' Ravneet Gill Growing up in a Chinese takeaway in rural Wales, Angela Hui was made aware at a very young age of just how different she and her family were seen by her local community. From attacks on the shopfront (in other words, their home), to verbal abuse from customers, and confrontations that ended with her dad wielding the meat cleaver; life growing up in a takeaway was far from peaceful. But alongside the strife, there was also beauty and joy in the rhythm of life in the takeaway and in being surrounded by the food of her home culture. Family dinners before service, research trips to Hong Kong, preparing for the weekend rush with her brothers - the takeaway is a hive of activity before a customer even places their order of 'egg-fried rice and chop suey'. Bringing readers along on the journey from Angela's earliest memories in the takeaway to her family closing the shop after 30 years in business, this is a brilliantly warm and immersive memoir from someone on the other side of the counter.

Today‘s book mail from Blackwell‘s (my new Book Depository 😉) is this food memoir about a girl growing up in her family‘s Chinese restaurant in Wales in the 1990s. With recipes!

@DebinHawaii , have you heard about this one?

Cathythoughts Looks good ! Great cover. I‘ve ordered from Blackwells too , I feel they take longer to deliver, but that‘s ok. ❤️ 11mo
LeahBergen @Cathythoughts I think they definitely take longer to arrive here in Canada (but luckily I already own way too many books so I‘m not suffering 😂). 11mo
batsy Oh, interesting! I remember just reading about this somewhere. 11mo

MaureenMc I had a pen pal (remember those?) in middle school & high school years from Wales whose family ran a Chinese take away. I think I need to read this! 11mo
Tamra I have yet to order from Blackwells, but I think I some books sitting in my cart. 😆 No surprise. They can‘t take any longer to deliver than my local Indie. I swear Pony Express would have been faster. 11mo
sarahbarnes I love Blackwells! 11mo
jlhammar This memoir sounds wonderful! I haven't ordered from Blackwell's yet, but I'm sure I'll need to at some point. 11mo
LeahBergen @batsy I think she was on a recent podcast, too. Now which one was it? 🤔 11mo
LeahBergen @MaureenMc Oh, pen pals! 🥰 That‘s so cool. 11mo
LeahBergen @Tamra I‘m used to the slowness of Canada Post. 🙄 11mo
LeahBergen @sarahbarnes I do, too. I‘ve ordered from them for years and found they were quite often cheaper than Book Depository. 11mo
LeahBergen @jlhammar Blackwell‘s is great. 👍 11mo
DebinHawaii I have not heard of this one but it looks interesting. I‘m stacking it! (And apparently I need to check out Blackwells too!) 😉 11mo
LeahBergen @DebinHawaii I always think of you when I pick up a good food memoir. 😘 And definitely give Blackwell‘s a try when you need a UK edition! 11mo
Centique I saw this on someone‘s book tube channel but can‘t remember - was it Simon Savidge maybe? Whoever it was, they said it was fantastic. Definitely want to read this! 11mo
LeahBergen @Centique oh, good to hear! I just happened to come across it while looking up another food memoir. 11mo
