Never steal a heart unless you can afford to lose your own. Lively St. Lemeston, Book 2 Through sheer force of will, Ash Cohen raised himself and his younger brother from the London slums to become the best of confidence men. Hes heartbroken to learn Rafe wants out of the life, but determined to grant his brother his wish. It seems simple: find a lonely, wealthy woman. If he can get her to fall in love with Rafe, his brother will be set. Theres just one problemAsh cant take his eyes off her. Heiress Lydia Reeve is immediately drawn to the kind, unassuming stranger who asks to tour her familys portrait gallery. And if she married, she could use the money from her dowry for her philanthropic schemes. The attraction seems mutual and oh so serendipitousuntil she realizes Ash is determined to matchmake for his younger brother. When Lydias passionate kiss puts Rafes future at risk, Ash is forced to reveal a terrible family secret. Rafe disappears, and Lydia asks Ash to marry her instead. Leaving Ash to wonderdid he choose the perfect woman for his brother, or for himself? ...as thought provoking as it is spicy; a wonderful sequel to Lerners Sweet Disorder. Library Journal ...a moving, memorable romance. Heroes and Heartbreakers I highly recommend this book and all of Rose Lerners back list. Smexy Books "True Pretenses is a wonderful book, and one Ill definitely be re-reading in the not too distant future." All About Romance Rose Lerner writes such rich, engaging characters. [...] Very smart and well done. USA Today The romance was lovely [...] Lerner is on my list of authors to follow because of her characterization and spin on otherwise familiar historical settings. The Book Pushers Warning: Contains secrets and pies.

I cannot think of many marriages in books I've read (which is weird because romance is one of my genres), but I love the marriage of convenience in True Pretenses. What a good romance!
And I'm not trying to imply that Jadzia and Worf's nuptials are convenience based! Cause I would still like to be Cordially Invited!

10/10 crying about Sibling Feelings
10/10 conning so hard it becomes true
10/10 acknowledging that your emotions are always Nice or Acceptable but they aren't nothing and the people who love you won't hate you for them

I don't really -need- another fictional Ash to worry about, but this one is a con man hero in a romance novel, so it's basically inevitable.

khooliha AND he has a younger sibling that he looks after and loves so much?! What are you trying to do, book?!?! 6y

Okay, so, I hated both the main characters when I first started reading this book. I thought they were snotty and staid. I'm so glad that I was so wrong! They were pretty quickly revealed to be sweet, passionate, sneaky and humorous! This was my first Rose Lerner book, but it won't be the last! I've already picked up the next book in this series! I have been thoroughly charmed by how all the historical romance tropes have been on their ears! 😍✨

Last but certainly not the least: #bookanddessert! True Pretenses came highly recommended by serial book pusher @Angieville, and it was on sale for 0.99usd so it was easy to give in. Chocolate caramel cake and cappuccino in the background.

I'm still on a romance reading streak. This book had a much more melancholy tone than the first in the series (Sweet Disorder), but it was just as lovely. I'm loving the political backdrop, and the way Lerner uses politics to tell truths about people. I am seriously in love with this series. 😍 #romantsy #historicalromance

Jewish conman hero. Small town heroine, obsessed with local politics, who needs to marry to access her dowry. Thank you, Rose Lerner, for this delightfully unconventional Regency romance series!

candyflossramparts I just finished this one! Loved it 😍 7y

I'm intrigued that at 29% all the secrets seem to be out in the open. Lots of time to deal with the fallout. Since sometimes the resolutions in romance can feel a little rushed once the revelations are made, I'm excited to see how this plays out.

Love is in the air, or at least in my e-reader, on this stormy night.

MarriedtoMrT Rose Lerner keeps coming up on my radar. I really need to read one of her books this year. 7y
leslieisreading @MarriedtoMrT this is my second of her books - I read the first one in this series last year and I adored it. It takes place in a small town and most of her characters are common folk, not lords and ladies. It's nice as a change of pace from your typical Regency. And there is lots of humor and swooniness. 7y

A Jewish hero in a historical romance! I've never encountered that before and I loved it.
