I Choose Darkness
I Choose Darkness: A Holiday Essay | Jenny Lawson
15 posts | 18 read | 4 to read
From cheap costumes to creepy dolls to questionable candy, number one New York Times bestselling author Jenny Lawson weaves a hauntingly hilarious account of her ongoing—sometimes outrageous—Halloween life.
The holly-jolly holidays aren’t for everyone, least of all when you look back on that one Christmas when there were two definitely haunted dolls waiting for you and your sister under the tree. You have to assume that’s where it all started.
And so it was for Jenny Lawson. Now, she lives in the land of eternal Halloween, as evidenced by her interior decor and general state of darkness. (Although, if you ask her, her taxidermy zoo is less dark, more delightful. But not everyone has taste, so what are you going to do?)
This essay takes Jenny back to where it all started, from her humble beginnings as a trick-or-treater in the 1980s, on high alert for (logistically improbable) candy laced with razor blades and the (allegedly) ever-present threat of satanists on the loose. From there, she has risen from the candy-wrapper ashes of her childhood to claim her rightful lifestyle as the queen of Halloween.

Cute short story about Jenny Lawson‘s love of Halloween, even though she was supposed to be talking about Christmas.

Ok, I didn‘t think I was going to like this, but it did give me some giggles. Jenny Lawson explains why Halloween is her favorite holiday.

As expected I enjoyed this short essay from Jenny Lawson. I was happy to be able to listen to it on audio via Prime as that is the best way to experience anything she writes.

I read Jenny Lawson‘s short story, I Choose Darkness, through Amazon Prime Reading/Audible. The author narrates this story and frankly, that‘s the only way to listen to a story written by Jenny Lawson. Especially since this story is about how she and her family celebrate the holidays.

Jenny Lawson always cracks me up, and I relate to her story of growing up in a really rural place where Halloween meant parents had to get creative.

This little essay is free if you have Prime. The audio is also free.

I haven't read anything from Jenny Lawson before but have heard good things about her books so when I saw this quick listen on Kindle unlimited I gave it a go. It was a funny anecdotal essay about her childhood experiences with Halloween. It's a bit rambling at times but since it's so short I didn't mind too much.
