A savage murder rocks a quiet Massachusetts suburb, revealing the dark secrets at the center of a group of friends and setting two women one with a traumatic past, the other a Boston police detective on a hunt for truth in this stylish debut thriller for fans of Megan Miranda and Shari Lapena... Snow falls softly outside Molly Bradleys home on a frigid January night. Inside, half a dozen close friends are gathered to celebrate the fortieth birthday of Mollys psychologist husband, Jay. Candlelight gleams against dark wood, wine flows, and the house rings with laughter. Everybody loves Jay, Molly most of all. Yet next morning, Molly discovers Jay dead on the floor of his office, his throat brutally slashed. After decades working with the Boston PD, Detective Rita Myers has grown accustomed to the banality of evilthe murders that make no sense beyond bad luck or a tragic brush with the worst of humanity. But Jay Bradleys murder isnt random, or a mere crime of opportunity. Rita is convinced that someone in the couples small circle killed him. Someone who was celebrating with them that night. Devastated, Molly tries to make sense of her husbands death. Jay was her rock, the only person who really understood the nightmare she lived through long ago. He knew the horrors shes kept hidden even from her friends. But shocking revelations are making her question if Jay was all he seemed to beand whether someone else knows her past too. And until Molly figures out who she can really trust, she wont be able to stop herself becoming the next target . . .

5⭐ (my first of the year)
I don‘t know what it was but this one hit just right for me because I genuinely cared for the MC and I don‘t usually, at least not to this degree. It appealed to me on every level…great characterization, mystery, suspense, and resolution. Plus the narration was the icing on the cake because they were each perfect for the parts they played.

I listened to the Audiobook and the two narrators were great! We have Molly, who is the wife and Rita, the homicide cop. If you don't like daul POV'S this book isn't for you.

After a night of throwing Jay, Molly's husband, a 40th birthday party, Molly wakes up to her husband's murder. She can't remember anything from the night before. ⬇️

Plus, she has a secret she has kept hidden for years. Molly seemed to me, a person looking for trouble. There were times, during the book, that I would think don't do that. Why did you do this.

Rita is a no-nonsense cop. She is very drab, but I liked her better than Molly. Rita is divorced and seems to have adopted her neighbor. There are a lot of suspects in this homicide. Can Rita figure it out before it's to late?

I read this book because some readers I follow on Litsy suggested it. It kept my attention throughout and I plan on reading more by Terri Parlato.

🙂 Happy Reading 🙂

Just finished this one up while covering the Saturday shift at the FOTL bookshop. I found it a snappy little page turner. My favorite thing about it is Det Rita Myers, a 60 year old detective who is competent and respected by her colleagues, subordinates, and superiors. Just a professional woman kicking it in her chosen career with many years experience. I just looked the author up and it seems there will another in the series 12/2023 😀

This was a fast-paced crime thriller offered by #aardvark. I really enjoyed Detective Rita. She‘s 60 with a fellow detective love interest (not the focus of her POV though) and I appreciated her character. I was wrong about who the killer was and although the motive was far-fetched, the small twist helped it make more sense. I didn‘t feel very connected to the MC but the plot was engaging and #audio was well done. 3.5⭐️ #pop23 book with a pet

This one starts out quite slowly, in large part because it's so disjointed with the short chapters and frequent perspective changes. When the action starts picking up, the short chapters work, but until then, it just feels like driving with one foot on the brake. And there are a LOT of chapters: 78 in a 312-page book. The present tense is distracting, as are the numerous similes throughout. The storyline makes a good argument for introversion.

Another redhead. I'm going to have to start tracking them, see what the actual percentage is in the fiction I read.

This is a super quick and entertaining whodunnit. There aren‘t a lot of twists and turns, but it was still an enjoyable ride. 4/5

I have to admit I wasn‘t super excited about this #aardvark pick but folks I was WRONG. I really enjoyed this debut thriller and would definitely like another book with Rita solving the crime.

⭐️⭐️

This is a fast read, but it just wasn‘t really for me. I thought the characters were flat, there was a lot of filler, and it was overall a little bland.

My #aardvark book was delivered today. For a second I thought it didn't have the Aardvark logo on the cover, but then spotted it in the window.

For a debut, it‘s solid. There were a few parts I would have gotten rid of to make the story more stream line but the book generally picked up at a good pace. I liked the ending of the main characters story but seriously wonder how she‘ll make a living. Maybe by drinking tea, which comes up a lot in this book.

Meh. I really thought I would enjoy this one but it was just okay. Molly throws a 40th birthday party for her husband Jay. The next morning Jay is found murdered in his study. Molly has secrets but who would kill to expose them? Told in two POVs, I didn't like that each character's POV used "I". It made it difficult to immerse myself with one character. And I found Molly really annoying. I actually hoped the killer would come back & off her. ⭐⭐⭐

Really had to think about which January #aardvark book I wanted to pick but ultimately kept coming back to this one.

Breanne1 As an aside I‘m excited for there to be a skip option on #aardvark. I probably would have skipped this month 🤷‍♀️ 1y

The January #aardvark Book Club books dropped early. I went with this debut mystery.

Another #Aardvark clue for January's picks and this is the guess I'm going with!

🎁 = There's a birthday being celebrated
🔪 = The birthday boy husband is killed by way of throat slash (ouch!)
🕵️‍♀️ = One of the female MC is a detective in Boston
❄️ = The party happens on a snowy night

What do you think? Any other guesses?

This debut mystery/thriller was too slow for my liking, but ultimately ties everything together. Read my full review here: https://debbybrauer.org/#all-the-dark-places

Publication is expected December 27.
