Golden Age: A novel | Jane Smiley
From the winner of the Pulitzer Prize: the much-anticipated final volume, following Some Luck and Early Warning, of her acclaimed American trilogya richly absorbing new novel that brings the remarkable Langdon family into our present times and beyond A lot can happen in one hundred years, as Jane Smiley shows to dazzling effect in her Last Hundred Years trilogy. Determined to evade disaster, for the planet and her family, Felicity worries that the farms once-bountiful soil may be permanently imperiled, by more than the extremes of climate change. And as they enter deeper into the twenty-first century, all the Langdon womenwives, mothers, daughtersfind themselves charged with carrying their storied past into an uncertain future. Combining intimate drama, emotional suspense, and a full command of history, Golden Age brings to a magnificent conclusion the century-spanning portrait of this unforgettable familyand the dynamic times in which theyve loved, lived, and died: a crowning literary achievement from a beloved master of American storytelling. From the Hardcover edition.

Although the last few chapters were “future” when Smiley wrote them (and are “past” now) she was so close to truth that it wasn‘t a problem. Through terrible injustices and deserved retributions, loves and feuds, I‘ve come to love spending time with the Langdon clan. Much to think about in this trilogy that I will be pondering for a long time.

Cathythoughts I loved this trilogy. So well written & great story & characters 4y
Lcsmcat @Cathythoughts The characters really stick with you, don‘t they? 4y

I know Frankie gets some redemption in this volume, but I love that Smiley killed him off by having him struck by lightning while he was pissing by the side of the runway in a thunderstorm!

Lcsmcat Loving this third volume of the trilogy. 4y

Ah, finished this one and thus the series.
I felt that I didn't connect with the characters as much as the previous two.
However, a good end to the trilogy.

#Septembowie #goldenyears , a trilogy The Last Hundred Years. I really loved this Trilogy I still remember the characters, I remember the mothers dying words. J Smiley attempts to write in all genres, but this is the only work I liked. I believe Greenlanders is excellent & also A Thousand Acres ( based on King Lear ). But they are not on kindle, so I'm waiting. It's Golden Age tho, not #goldenyears. Pardonnez moi @Marchpane @Cinfhen 😉

Cinfhen I'll accept it 😍 7y
Cathythoughts You're a star 😊😍😍 @Cinfhen (edited) 7y
Marchpane Never read her work before but this sounds so up my alley! 7y

My #bookhaul from the library book sale, with Balthazar peeking over the Sandburg Poems. #littenkitten #catsoflitsy #norestraint

ValerieAndBooks That's a very good haul! Balthazar looks impressed with it! 8y
Nebklvr Do you measure how big the haul is by how much of the cat you can see? 8y
rubyslippersreads What's the book on top of the righthand pile? 8y

I thought the first book in this trilogy was wonderful, but this final book focused on the characters I liked the least and by the end, I just didn't care.

my least favorite of the three, perhaps because my own time is the least interesting to me. still, so thoughtfully written. 4 🌟 #minibookreview

Hazel0303 Totally agree with you that this was my least favorite of the three. I felt the author was a little too "chicken little" about the future. I have more faith in humanity than what her view of the world seemed to be. It did really make me think though! 9y
mmckale I agree! I actually wished she didn't get into the future at all. It felt silly. 9y
