The Sweet Spot
The Sweet Spot: A Novel | Amy Poeppel
15 posts | 16 read | 7 to read
Amy Poeppel brings her signature big-hearted, charming (The Washington Post) style to this wise and joyful novel that celebrates love, hate, and all of the glorious absurdity in between. In the heart of Greenwich Village, three women form an accidental sorority when a babybelonging to exactly none of themlands on their collective doorstep. Lauren and her familylucky bastardshave been granted the use of a spectacular brownstone, teeming with history and dizzyingly unattractive 70s wallpaper. Adding to the homes bohemian, grungy splendor is the bar occupying the basement, a (mostly) beloved dive called The Sweet Spot. Within days of moving in, Lauren discovers that she has already made an enemy in the neighborhood by inadvertently sparking the divorce of a couple she has never actually met. Melindas husband of thirty years has dumped her for a young celebrity entrepreneur named Felicity, and, to Melindas horror, the lovebirds are soon to become parents. In her incandescent rage, Melinda wreaks havoc wherever she can, including in Felicitys Soho boutique, where she has a fit of epic proportions, which happens to be caught on film.? Oliviathe industrious twenty-something behind the counter, who has big dreams and bigger debtgets caught in the crossfire. In an effort to diffuse Melindas temper, Olivia has a tantrum of her own and gets unceremoniously canned, thanks to TikTok. When Melindas ex follows his lover across the country, leaving their squalling baby behind, the three women rise to the occasion in order to forgive, to forget, to Ferberize, and to track down the wayward parents. But can their little village find a way toward the happily ever afters they all desire? Welcome to The Sweet Spot.

My top read for February. A lovely read but don‘t read the jacket copy until you‘re done!

Andrew65 I hate it when jacket covers give thing away. I always avoid them like the plague. 10mo
janeycanuck @Andrew65 I have had too many books spoiled this year so I don‘t read them either, anymore! 10mo

This is a chaotic, humorous, multigenerational story about four strong women told from multiple points of view. It deals with family, parenting, romance, career choices and divorce. I loved the craziness of family life depicted and especially the dynamics between the kids (both young and grown) and their parents. There was even a lovely romance to round out the story. I have read all of this author's books and she never disappoints. Such fun! 4.5

This book should come with a warning label or two like "not safe to read while drinking hot beverages as you are sure to spit it out as you burst out laughing" or "not safe to read in bed beside a sleeping spouse as you will shake the bed as you attempt to stifle laughter.". I did both and stayed up way past my bedtime to read this. The characters are everything.

I love this kind of book—full of quirky characters and family members and people interacting with each other in unexpected ways. There‘s not much action, but it‘s a character driven story. Charming and amusing. It‘s definitely an “it takes a village” philosophy when two pretty horrible parents basically forget their infant. The “Maisy the Lazy Bird” and “cowbird” analogies are hilarious. I loved this book.

I really enjoyed it but I have a couple of beefs with the jacket copy:
1. Way to ignore Evelyn‘s existence. She is a prominent character and I‘d consider this book about all 4 women, at its core.
2. The thing described in the copy doesn‘t happen until half way through the book. Why do copywriters do this?!

But this was sweet and funny and heartwarming. It just needs better jacket copy.

marleed Haha. I often read Elon Hillderbrand books and wonder if the publishing company randomly pulls a photo from Nantucket stock footage because the lovely covers often don‘t marry up with the actual story. 2y
Prairiegirl_reading I can‘t stand when that happens!!! Why do they do that?? If a thing doesn‘t happen in the first few pages it shouldn‘t be in the jacket copy!! 2y
janeycanuck @marleed OMG - I just started The Hotel Nantucket on audio and have been asking that already!! 2y

janeycanuck @Prairiegirl_reading Same! I get that you have to set the scene, etc but you don‘t need 200 pages. If it takes that long, that‘s not what the book is about! 2y
marleed Hahaha - I feel so seen! M making my way forward and backward through the EH canon and each time I go in to the next one I‘m testing the cover against the story! 2y

This book took me way too long to ready because I was so bored for the first half. There were so many characters and it was difficult to keep them all sorted out. Then the second half was so unbelievable that it wasn‘t even fun to read. ⭐️⭐️

So much chaos in this fun novel about disasters, houseguests, divorce, social media, and deadlines. Fun characters and a supporting cast that steals the limelight - it‘s witty and bighearted.
