Thicker Than Water
Thicker Than Water: A Novel | Megan Collins
9 posts | 9 read | 3 to read
Two sisters-in-law find themselves at painful odds when the man who connects them—the brother of one, the husband of the other—is accused of a brutal crime in this twisty thriller from the author of the “exceedingly entertaining” (The New York Times) The Family Plot. Julia and Sienna Larkin are sisters-in-law, connected by Julia’s husband and Sienna’s brother, Jason. More than that, the two are devoted best friends and business partners, believing that theirs is a uniquely unbreakable bond. To Sienna, her protective brother can do no wrong, and although Julia knows he’s not perfect, they’ve built a comfortable life and family together. Recently, Jason has been putting in long hours to secure a promotion at work, so when his boss is found brutally murdered—his lips sewn shut—the Larkins are shocked and unsettled, especially as local gossip swirls. A few days later, Julia and Sienna’s lives are upended when Jason gets into a car accident and is placed in a medically induced coma. Worse, the police arrive with news that he’s the prime suspect in the murder investigation. With Jason unable to respond—and with Julia and Sienna working to clear his name—the two women find their friendship threatened for the first time: Sienna staunchly maintains her brother’s innocence, but as their investigation uncovers a complicated web of secrets, Julia is less sure she’s willing to defend her husband. With her signature “moody and atmospheric” (USA TODAY) writing, Megan Collins has crafted a rich, gripping story that explores just how fragile our closest bonds can be.

I didn't love this, but I did find it reasonably entertaining and enjoyed the relationship and growth of the two main characters. While the mystery was certainly central to the story, it was also an excellent vehicle to illustrate the issues in their bond as friends, relatives and business partners. Jason's character was also interesting in his need to see himself as a hero vs certain weaknesses. It could make a good lighter book club pick. 3.75

Good one! This book was more like a domestic mystery than a thriller, and I liked the central relationship between Sienna and Julia, who are sisters-in-law, business partners and best friends. The central story is that their brother/husband is in a coma (not a spoiler) after an accident as they try to unravel whether he was involved in a crime. It definitely held my attention! I would have liked more about Julia‘s relationship with her teen son.

This is the second Megan Collins book I‘ve read and I need to read her others asap! This one was such a thrill ride and I couldn‘t put it down! One thing I really loved about this book was the friendship between Julia and Sienna. Even when things got rough they still had so much love for each other. I loved the mystery in this book! I really just enjoyed everything about it.

LiteraryinLawrence My hold just came in on this! I must have been the first one to request it! 9mo

MYSTERY - THRILLER

A murder, an alibi with holes, an accident, and many unanswered questions about who killed Gavin.

There is a lot of drama, a lot of lies, a lot of untrustworthy characters, and a lot of what ifs and unbelievable situations.

The book is a slow burn, but it still wasn't one I was anxious to get back to. 3/5

It may be a better match for you.

Jason is in a car accident resulting in a coma, &evidence of his boss‘ murder is found in his car. While the police hone in on his involvement, his wife & his sister grapple w/ the info coming to light.

I wasn‘t always sure what the truth was or where the clues were leading, so I genuinely enjoyed going along for the ride with both Julia &Sienna. This was as much about murder as it was about family, friendship, &how well you really know someone.

I absolutely devoured this latest Collins' book. I'm a big fan of psychological thrillers and this one doesn't disappoint. Great unexpected twists and two strong women who complement and learn from each other. What's not to love!?!
Many thanks to Atria Books and #netgalley for this ARC in return for my honest review.

Julia and Sienna are sister-in-laws and Jason (husband and brother) has been in an accident. He‘s in a coma, but his boss is been murdered and the women are torn between their loyalty of Jason and what might be the truth. A pretty quick read with some nice twists.
