What the Neighbors Saw
What the Neighbors Saw: A Novel | Melissa Adelman
12 posts | 13 read | 7 to read
Desperate Housewives meets The Couple Next Door in a chilling story of murder and intrigue set in a well-to-do DC suburb. Sometimes the darkest acts occur in the most beautiful houses... When Alexis and her husband Sam buy a neglected Cape Cod house in an exclusive DC suburb, they are ecstatic. Sam is on the cusp of making partner at his law firm, Alexis is pregnant with their second child, and their glamorous neighbors welcome the couple with open arms. Things are looking up, and Alexis believes she can finally leave her troubled past behind. But the neighborhoods picture-perfect image is shattered when their neighbor Teddy a handsome, successful father of three is found dead on the steep banks of the Potomac River. The community is shaken, and as the police struggle to identify and apprehend the killer, tension in the neighborhood mounts and long-buried secrets start to emerge. In the midst of the turmoil, Alexis takes comfort in her budding friendship with Teddys beautiful and charismatic widow, Blair. But as the women grow closer, the neighborhood only becomes more divided. And when the unthinkable truth behind Teddys murder is finally uncovered, both Blair and Alexis must reexamine their friendship and decide how far they are willing to go to preserve the lives they have so carefully constructed.

This novel was just okay. It seemed like there were a lot of details and information presented that had little to nothing to do with the storyline. I also struggled to relate to any of the characters; they were either too unrealistic or too different from an average person. The audiobook didn‘t bring any extra enjoyment. While I appreciated that there were two narrators, they were both too monotone in their delivery and lacked inflection

I actually liked this one, which is an unpopular opinion. I hated some of the characters, but was drawn in by all the crazy people in this neighborhood. I will say, I was surprised by the twist but not thoroughly. I could see everything unraveling but still didn't know exactly what was happening until it was literally spelled out for me lol. Overall, it kept me turning pages so it's a pick for me! ⭐⭐⭐✨

What a great debut novel! Told in alternating perspectives, Alexis & her growing family move to a ritzy neighborhood where Blair Bard is an established & respected fixture. While some of the plot‘s twists are more expected than others, I found myself thoroughly hooked in this drama that reminded me a little bit of our neighborhood (minus the corpses, rampant infidelity & backbiting!). Alexis gets tiresome but I‘m looking forward to her 2nd book!

MYSTERY - THRILLER

Sam and Alexis needed to get out of their condo.

When a run-down house in a swanky neighborhood came on the market, they had to have it.

Then one of the neighbors is murdered.

A mystery and drama wrapped up into one good read with twists and distrust.

A bit predictable, but a great debut! 4/5

A domestic thriller that is a slow burn. It is dual POV's, Blair and Alexis. Alexis is a mom with another on the way, always wanting to be on the finer things in life. Blair is rich and seems to have it all, great job, great house, great husband and money.

Alexis gets Sam, her husband, to buy a house in an enfluent neighborhood. She thinks this will be the perfect place to raise their kids. Soon after moving, things in their life start falling 👇

Alexis gets Sam, her husband, to buy a house in an enfluent neighborhood. She thinks this will be the perfect place to raise their kids. Soon after moving, things in their life start falling apart. The best thing to happen to Alexis, since moving, is Blair.

Blair makes it seem like everything is grand in her family. She's hiding a secret though. Soon she meets her new neighbors and things start changing in her life. What actually is she hiding?

For a first novel this was good. I didn't care for the slow burn of the book. It just moved to slow for me. It kept my interest when I was reading it, but was something I could put down and not worry about it. I did figure out part of the mystery of the book early, and the other mystery with about 15% left in the book. I like when I am completely caught off guard, and this one just didn't surprise me.

Tentative Publication is June 20, 2023

This was my May #bookspin. It started strong, but then it seemed to swirl lightly without a goal. The ending was predictable. Meh. @thearomaofbooks

REVIEW 6/20.

Sam and Alexis needed to get out of their condo.

They saw a house they had to have in a swanky area.

When one of the neighbors is murdered, Sam and Alexis find out that even living in a posh neighborhood doesn't keep you safe or free from gossip and unsavory neighbors.

A mystery and drama wrapped up into one good read with twists and distrust.

A bit predictable, but a great debut! 4/5

My first Goodreads won, and it was good one. This story is entertaining even tho I didn't like any of the characters. I pretty much know immediately how done it, but the quirky neighborhood kept me turning the pages and reading past my bedtime. Plus a great little twisty ending. I hope this book does well once it's finally releases in June. I will definitely read more by her if given a chance

BookLineNSinker I would definitely read more by this author!! 8mo

I love getting ARC'S! This story is so dark and twisty and I was there for every page. I must say our FMC is almost unlikable which made me like her if that makes sense. She is who she is. This book comes out in June so perfect beach read or summer read when needing to avoid the heat. Keep your eye out for this one.

BookedBySunrise Just finished, and I agree with your review. Page Turner for me as well 13mo
