English as a Second Language
English as a Second Language | Megan Crane
5 posts | 7 read | 1 to read
In this wickedly funny first novel-think Legally Blonde in Oxford-a young New York woman exchanges her corporate job for a year of books, blokes, beers, and new best friends in graduate school in England. Alexandra Brennan is fed up with her dead end New York City job-and even more fed up of running into her smug ex-boyfriend. So when he crosses the line by telling her that she'll never get into graduate school in the United Kingdom, that's precisely what she does. Armed with imported cigarettes and extra strength coffee, Alex leaves home and crosses the Atlantic to face all that Great Britain and grad school have to offer, including ill-considered romantic interludes, a red-headed nemesis with intellectual pretensions and ulterior motives, a preponderance of eighties music, and more books than she can possibly read in a year. What she discovers, however, is that instead of running away from home - she may have actually found it. With a cheeky sense of humor and terrific cast of characters, ENGLISH AS A SECOND LANGUAGE is a funny and irreverent novel about a young woman's misadventures on the path to adulthood.

Thank you @JenlovesJT47 for tag me. Today is Wednesday but answers still count☺️. 1. P.S.I Love You from English to Spanish. 2. No but English is my second language so I think that could count, I hope. I took French many years ago but I can't say I can read it, write it or speak that language. I hope someday I could do what your are doing because there are always some aspects that you can remember.

I can‘t imagine trying to learn English..
Everyday I am amazed at my kiddos
They‘re rock stars

GingerAntics I swear, anyone who takes on this crazy language as a second language is an absolute rock star! I swear, there seem to be basic rules that all languages around the world follow in one way or another...and then there‘s English. 5y
TheBookHippie @GingerAntics exactly !!!! I have white people brag that their children are bilingual yeah they‘re just learning Spanish or French ...try to learn English after knowing your countries language and another language most kids I read with are bilingual some trilingual. I can‘t even imagine.... 5y
GingerAntics Yeah. It‘s amazing how many languages non-English speakers speak. Then English throws them for a loop. People act like if you struggle to learn English as an adult, your less than somehow. They never take into account this is the 3rd, 4th, 5th language and it‘s a WEIRD language with crazy, ridiculous rules!!! We seriously don‘t think about it because we learned it from the cradle, but it‘s nuts!!! 5y

GingerAntics I remember in grade school when we struggled with other languages, our English teachers would tell us English was the hardest language to learn. I totally believe that, but unfortunately if you are a native English speaker, it pretty much makes every other language hard to learn because you have to relearn everything you know about language. 5y
TheBookHippie @GingerAntics I‘ve found that at least all other languages are logical 🤣😬 5y
GingerAntics Yup! They just aren‘t to native English speakers, because our logical is not logical to anyone else. So it‘s learning a new kind of logic. Once that‘s on board, you‘re usually good to go. 5y

Was taking Speaking Exams today, although I must have swallowed a cactus over night. My co-examiner said that my hudky voice distracted our last candidate. Well, his man-bun plus muscles under a flannel shirt distracted me. So, that should make us even. 😜

Also, I rebelled and wore a pair of grey jeans. A #novelty.
Pic was taken pre-makeup.

I'm looking forward to yoga pants, tea and something to eat other than biscuits.

MayJasper Rebel away 👍 5y
Kaye Man bun and muscles. 😂. Did that distract you in a good way or bad way ? 5y
Velvetfur Lovely photo, and great story! I know what you mean about a man bun and muscles, hehe 😜 5y

julesG @Kaye @Velvetfur - I might have given that candidate slightly more time to talk (about 15 seconds). I was wondering whether there's a tattoo under the flannel and did not look at the clock. 5y
julesG @MayJasper Will do again in two weeks. I'm even thinking about channeling my inner House, MD and wear trainers and taking my lovely cane with flames. 😁 5y
Trashcanman So I've been spotted in Germany, I'm there on official business. 😉😜 5y

Hey Littens who are also teachers - a friend of mine is going back to school and English is not her first language (it‘s Spanish). Her English is good but I‘ve noticed some things in her writing that I‘d like to be able to help her with. Do you have easy to use tools/books/websites that we both can use? I want to teach her to fish, so to speak.

ErinC NoRedInk (maybe have to be a teacher?) and Khan Academy both provide grammar tutorials. I‘m not an ELL teacher though so maybe someone else could provide better tools suited to English Language Learners 6y
jpmcwisemorgan @ErinC Grammar tutorials! I can‘t believe I didn‘t think of that, thank you. I will take any and all suggestions. 6y
GlassAsDiamonds DuoLingo could be a good place to start, it‘s an easy App that could help her polish things. Also Grammarly for the same tweaks? 6y
jpmcwisemorgan @GlassAsDiamonds Yes! I knew if I asked y‘all would give me so many great ideas. 6y

#beyourself #readyourself I've had people tell me various things about what it means to be a reader. "Serous readers don't read fluffy chick lit" "adults don't read kids books." And that is one of the things I love about Litsy. Everyone here encourages you to read what makes you happy. No guilt, only pleasure. I love chick lit, I love juvenile fiction and YA, and I also love "serious" literary fiction. That's me.

Cinfhen So true!! Litsy celebrates and encourages all to #BeYourself 7y
Sace I don't care what anyone says Because of Winn Dixie is one of the deepest books I've read. Children's book my fanny. It's even got a touch of Magical Realism. Littens rule. They understand that the term "reader" cannot be limited. 7y
Lwiesman I have read some amazing YA books to my children. Most of them have been from our homeschool curriculum. Books that I would have never pick up off the shelf! 7y
