Chenneville: A Novel of Murder, Loss, and Vengeance
Chenneville: A Novel of Murder, Loss, and Vengeance | Paulette Jiles
11 posts | 6 read | 10 to read
Consumed with grief, driven by vengeance, a man undertakes an unrelenting odyssey across the lawless post-Civil War frontier seeking redemption in this fearless novel from the award-winning and New York Times bestselling author of News of the World. Union soldier John Chenneville suffered a traumatic head wound in battle. His recovery took the better part of a year as he struggled to regain his senses and mobility. By the time he returned home, the Civil War was over, but tragedy awaited. John's beloved sister and her family had been brutally murdered.Their killer goes by many names. He fought for the North in the late unpleasantness, and wore a badge in the name of the law. But the man John knows as A. J. Dodd is little more than a rabid animal, slaughtering without reason or remorse, needing to be put down.Traveling through the unforgiving landscape of a shattered nation in the midst of Reconstruction, John braves winter storms and confronts desperate people in pursuit of his quarry. Untethered, single-minded in purpose, he will not be deterred. Not by the U.S. Marshal who threatens to arrest him for murder should he succeed. And not by Victoria Reavis, the telegraphist aiding him in his death-driven quest, yet hoping he'll choose to embrace a life with her instead. And as he trails Dodd deep into Texas, John accepts that this final reckoning between them may cost him more than all he's already lost...

I‘m a bit bummed I didn‘t like this one more. I loved two of her other books. It‘s possible that it‘s because it‘s about a man trying to enact vigilante justice, searching for his sister‘s murderer with plans to kill him. Which sounds like it could be exciting, but I was bored. And I guess I don‘t like the idea of revenge?

Anyway, Venkman is posing for you, wishing you a happy holiday. 🐈‍⬛❤️💚❤️🎄

2. I checked out the tagged book in June and need to finish it in the next two weeks before it‘s due back at the library.

I needed an auxiliary cable. I went on Amazon (I know, I know…). Of course a couple books ended up in the box, too. Don‘t ask me how it happened 😆 📚 #BookHaul

An extremely rich, character driven novel which reminded me of how much I love Jules‘ writing. Chenneville is a story that evokes a place and moment in history so strongly, while still remaining a really personal story about its central character. This is definitely an instance where reading in print rather than listening to the audio would have enhanced my reading experience. The narration here was quite flat which didn‘t do the story service

He was held up three days at Columbus because the ferry cable had broken, and so he watched from under a verandah roof....

They spoke of little things, things that mattered. The death of a baby from fever, that Jameson's mare had come home herself after being sto- len, that a man had come who read aloud from newspapers gathered from the entire world over, including stories of polar explorers and sinking ships in the Atlantic Ocean...

I picked up 3 books at #TexasBookFestival this year. Can‘t wait to read them all! (Though I also just got Iron Flame and Bookshops & Bonedust should be here tomorrow, so I don‘t know what order I‘ll get to them!)📚 I had a fun time at the fest even though it was chilly and drizzly.

I also saw Nana Kwame Adjei-Brenyah talk about Chain-Gang All-Stars, but it was in a theater and they didn‘t allow photos.

ShelleyBooksie Starter Villan sounds so good! 14mo
Hooked_on_books Chain-gang is my favorite of the year. I bet that talk was awesome! 14mo
Soubhiville @Hooked_on_books It was really great. He did a reading from the prologue and had the crowd chanting Bishop‘s name as if we were at the match. It was powerful. 14mo
Hooked_on_books That‘s incredible! It gives me chills just reading that. And goes to show how hard that book is hitting people, which I love. 13mo

Historical fiction mixed with a bit of mystery and the western genre. Post-Civil War, Union soldier John Chenneville returns home, broken and shell shocked. Upon discovering the murder of his sister and family, Chenneville hunts the man responsible through a pre-Reconstruction south. Encountering struggling characters along the way, this is a reflection of the era of the aftermath of war and its victims in American history.
