This book was interesting. A women enters an abusive marriage and decides how she's going to get back at her husband. Written in 1992 and set in Bangladesh, this is one that somehow escaped my attention (though the English translation is from 2010). I thought it was really good but it's short and I think the blurbs about it give too much away.

Today was a much better day than yesterday, and happy I can kickoff Mother‘s Day weekend on a positive note!

Finished this #Bangladesh #Readingasia2021 pick this morning. It was not quite what I expected. This slim novel by an author who has been forced to live in exile, with numerous fatwas directed at her, is more of a treatise against the senseless injustices against women in the name of religion.

alisiakae This is my #bookspin #doublespin pick! @TheAromaofBooks And I‘m putting this in the translation prompt for #booked2021 and moving what I had there to the #peacekeeper prompt @Cinfhen @BarbaraTheBibliophage 4y

I‘m excited for my next read for #readingasia2021. While the author is not technically AAPI (she has never lived in America), she is South Asian. #Bangladesh #translation

ChasingOm Oooh, this sounds good! 4y
SaunteringVaguelyDownwards I loved teaching Whale Rider in my global lit class, although we only had time for excerpts from the book and focused more on the movie so they could see and understand Maori culture. 4y

B is for Bangladesh. A great short translated novel by a female author on the revenge enacted by a woman whose husband changes suddenly and harshly after their marriage and her actions to regain her independence. Highly recommended. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

“What difference did it make to whom I was married?...A wife is like a buffalo...” The complexities of gender equality and marriage and religion and culture. “My body...to purchase power.” Props to her!

Some exploration of gaslighting in this text so far, dreadful how a husband can have the power of insisting a wife gets an abortion. So frightening but also strange how people can change so easily and readily. I‘m up to the part where I think the ‘revenge‘ is about to begin.

B is for Bangladesh, took me a while to find a work in translation by a female author from Bangladesh but now I have one and it is quite interesting regarding the terribly common and disappointingly worldwide problem of domestic difficulties.

I‘ve apparently unintentionally started reading my way across the Indian subcontinent this year, and this was my choice for Bangladesh. The writing is beautiful but there are a lot of traumatic episodes that happen. I hope to be able to track down more of the authors work!

A modern day cautionary tale about women and equality. I had some rage induced moments, but overall I enjoyed the insight into Bangladeshi culture and the gender roles and expectations. So glad this author is speaking out against these oppressive ideals. #witmonth

A little morning reading after a morning run. Should have done the opposite because this books is causing all sorts of ragey feels. #witmonth #revenge #taslimanasrin
