A first novel for young adults wonderfully evokes the historical period of the 1920's, a love of birding, and a girl's coming-of-age and sexual awarenessWINNER OF THE MILKWEED PRIZE FOR CHILDREN'S LITERATUREWINNER OF THE 2013 PATERSON PRIZE FOR BOOKS FOR YOUNG READERSALA RAINBOW LIST RECOMMENDED BOOKAMELIA BLOOMER PROJECT LIST RECOMMENDED BOOKLAMBDA LITERARY AWARD FINALISTMINNESOTA BOOK AWARD FINALISTFOREWARD REVIEWS BOOK OF THE YEAR HONORABLE MENTIONIn the summer of 1926, sixteen-year-old Garnet Richardson is sent to a lake resort to escape the polio epidemic in the city. She dreams of indulging her passion for ornithology and visiting the famous new amusement park - a summer of fun before she returns for her final year of high school, after which she's expected to marry a nice boy and settle into middle-class homemaking. But in the country, Garnet finds herself under the supervision of equally oppressive guardians - her father's wealthy cousin and the matron's stuck-up daughter. Only a liberating job in a hat shop, an intense, secret relationship with a daring and beautiful flapper, and a deep faith in her own fierce heart can save her from the suffocating boredom of traditional femininity.

"I looked over at Isabella - those perfect lips, that short hair starting to dry with little tufts sticking up at funny angles, those boyish clothes all rumpled and soaked. I wanted to tell her secrets I hadn't even told myself yet."

Pickpick

I really enjoyed this short, quiet book about the coming of age of a bird-loving (and girl-loving) girl in the 1920s. It made me want to spend a summer in a lake town - working in a shop, watching birds and flirting with pretty girls. ❤

Lauredhel Love that cover. 7y

Not sure if this really counts as an #alliterativetitle since there are some non-S words in the middle, but it was one of my favorite books from all of last year, so I thought it was close enough... #marchintoreading

Some great #queerbooks mail today! Queer historical fiction - one of my fave genres! The Griffin is for #queer52 and Wildthorn may be one of my substitutes for an already read book on that list. 🌈

Bibliogeekery OMG! Exciting! I always get inspiration from your #queerbook posts! Keep 'em coming! #kindredspirits 7y
Yamich49 @Bibliogeekery Haha right back at you! #kindredspirits for sure! 👏🏽 There are some good books on the #queer52 list that I hadn't heard of yet so there will be more where this came from in the near future! 😉 7y
Bibliogeekery @Yamich49 sweet! Will look forward to them! 🎉📚😍 7y

CaseyTheCanadianLesbrarian I loved SILHOUETTE OF A SPARROW!! WILDTHORN I didn't like as much. I am also a sucker for a good queer historical book. 7y
SpiderCrafts Sounds like a great read! 😊 I'm adding Silhouette of a Sparrow to my library list to check out. 7y
Yamich49 @CaseyTheCanadianLesbrarian Good to know! Wildthorn sounds really good in theory so I'm a little disappointed to hear that you didn't like it! I'm queer historical book trash so maybe I'll end up liking it anyway. 😉😆 7y
Yamich49 @AlobelThee Nice! You'll have to let me know what you think. It sounds like it'll be a really good read! 7y
Zelma I liked Wildthorn quite a bit. Love historical fiction in general, queer historical fiction, and anything to do with asylums. 👍 7y

Mehso-so

A sweet little f/f romance, unfortunately the writing was all matter of fact and far too much telling was done instead of showing.
