Syria Speaks
Syria Speaks: Art and Culture from the Frontline | Malu Halasa, Zaher Omareen, Nawara Mahfoud
4 posts | 13 to read
In Syria, culture has become a critical line of defence against tyranny. Syria Speaks is a celebration of a people determined to reclaim their dignity, freedom and self-expression. It showcases the work of over fifty artists and writers who are challenging the culture of violence in Syria. Their literature, poems and songs, cartoons, political posters and photographs document and interpret the momentous changes that have shifted the frame of reality so drastically in Syria. Moving and inspiring, Syria Speaks is testament to the courage, creativity and imagination of the Syrian people. Syria Speaks is a remarkable achievement and a remarkable book a wise, courageous, imaginative and beautiful response to all that is ugly in human behaviour. This extraordinary anthology gives a voice to those we may have forgotten, or whom we may classify as simply passive and silent victims. The people shown living, dreaming and speaking here are far more than victims and only silent if we refuse to hear them. A.L. Kennedy An extraordinary collection, revealing a dynamic and exciting culture in painful transition a culture where artists are really making a difference ... You need to read this book. Brian Eno

Drew a blank for today‘s prompt, and after a quick search added this to my TBR. “A beautiful collection showcasing the work of dozens artists, writers, cartoonists and revolutionaries challenging the narrative of violence that has gripped the country.” I‘m excited to see the art coming out of #syria right now. One of the only good things fostered by that kind of darkness is powerful artwork. #letstravelaugust

Alternate #Recommendsday query: I've been researching a bunch of different chrarities this morning to see how a monetary donation might best help #Syria. Between Charity Navigator and collected lists, I've narrowed it down to Islamic Relief USA, Doctors Without Borders, and Migrant Offshore Aid Station. All have different MOs, and I realize I can donate to all three (eventually), but I'd like input if you have it. Thank you!

SuperPunkNinja I donate regularly to doctors w/o Borders. They're a great organization. I don't know so much about the others. 7y
LindsayReads Thanks, @McShelfington! I am also most familiar with DWB/MSF, and with friends in public health, I like it even more. Have you read 7y

saresmoore This is a great idea! Thanks for sharing. 7y
drokka Doctors Without Borders does bot take charity from governments so that they can go anywhere without having to pander to politics. And you can select to donate to a particular cause or generally 7y
LindsayReads Thanks, @Suet624! This was one of the lists I consulted. Great ideas! 7y

Another instance of my "hey it's almost midnight, let's start another non-fiction book" moments. I have them a lot ? Anyway this one is very good so far and I took care not to read it on a plane cause that's Brown Girl safety 101 apparently.

#nonfiction #internationallit #syria #anthology

BookishFeminist I get those a lot too. I don't know what it is about nighttime that makes me want to read a fresh nonfiction book? I guess since I know I won't finish it in one sitting it's more tempting. It's addicting! 8y
SuperPunkNinja Sounds great! 8y
