This absolutely broke my heart! This is a personal, up close look at the real devastation of war and how it changes the landscape of the lives affected by it. It‘s horrifying and visceral and somehow, above everything, hopeful for a future that almost doesn‘t seem real. Everyone should have to read this story! 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟

One of the more interesting passages in the book. Christie was hardly free of the prejudices of her time, but she thought about things white feminists of decades later didn't.

This memoir of 1930s archeological digs in Syria is, unsurprisingly, all kinds of problematic. Still, if you're fond of Christie's voice there's a lot to enjoy, not least of which is her own enjoyment. It's kind of awesome to read about a middle-aged woman gamely heading out on adventures, and as a working member of a team. As a fan, it's also fun to notice where she used her experiences in her fiction.

Ruthiella I liked it too, despite some of the more cringe-worthy parts. I thought the bit about the deaf vicar in the train misunderstanding her relationship to the serviceman was hilarious. 2w

I read and highly recommend the original middle grade chapter book Refugee by Alan Gratz frequently. This graphic novel version still brings a lot of the emotion but with using panels & speech bubbles paired with illustrations instead of descriptive paragraphs of text.

A book I hope will be read in a lot of schools. Or, let's say, a book I hope will be read by a lot of people. Especially in Europe, even though it's a universal topic.
Loved Salama and her spirit, her goal to help. And loved how not toxic Kenan was. No toxic masculinity here. I wish them all the best for their future 💖

This was a great novel in verse. Poems are aligned left and right along with other spacing to highlight aspects of the story. It has wonderful literary references, figurative language, and football details. It‘s all wrapped up in the story of Kareem figuring out his own way as a Syrian American. It‘s set in 2016 & 2017 with the executive order banning international travel from Syria and other countries directly impacting Kareem‘s family.

Sometimes you just need to enjoy a book with your supper. I‘m already in the middle of several books, but I picked up this one that came off my holds list. It‘s a novel in verse about a middle school Syrian American boy who wants to be on the school football team. It‘s full of football and bookish references.

Ruthiella Agree. I can‘t eat and read a book that is too stressful or difficult. 3mo
Daisey @Ruthiella It depends on the day for me. More than reading with a meal, I needed something lighter after a long day at school. 3mo

This is the story a mother and her three daughters who move back home to Syria from NY after the death of their father/husband, told through the eyes of the 12 yo. It‘s 2011 and the Syrian Civil war is beginning. Unsafe in their hometown, they travel through several countries in search of safety, following the path of a heroine in a story they are familiar with. I loved that it‘s an immigration story not set in America with alternating storylines.

Recommended to me from a book group member, and now I need to tell them how deeply this book gutted me. I hadn‘t really understood what was happening in Syria, and now I have a story that really puts so much of it into perspective. Fantastic and difficult and oh so necessary.

A Syrian refugee with cerebral palsy who describes life before their civil war and life as a refugee making her way to Germany.

A harrowing tale for sure, although some of it seemed a little surface level or maybe like it was written for young readers.
