Anne Sexton: A Biography | Diane Wood Middlebrook

Book binge.... apart from an hour of visiting from brother and kids my day has been spent with Anne. (Kids and hubby have played new video games).
Anne was exhausting, fascinating and brilliant. I don‘t know how I haven‘t read more of her poetry over the years - I shall be dipping in and out from now on.
I have her daughters book ready to read - but will leave a bit of space first as I don‘t imagine it will be an easy read.

I would like to think this is a thing of the past, but I remember my MIL the first time I had to travel with work - don‘t they know you have a family?
Did anyone ever ask a man this?
It‘s about choices, not boxes.

TrishB @GoldenGirl @RaimeyGallant @JoRead just had to agree to disagree with my Mum. She didn‘t understand my feminism at all - she thought it was illegal and immoral not to change my name when I got married...we were never going to be on the same page. (edited) 6y

GoldenGirl @TrishB @RaimeyGallant @JoRead My mom thinks I should serve my husband. For example, yesterday during dinner. She thought I should stop what I was doing and make him a drink. Luckily, he is a big boy and can make his own damn drink. 6y

Velvetfur Phew, I now feel blessed that my Mum, even though these kind of things have been her upbringing, is willing to listen and be educated about men having to fend for themselves even if they share their life with a woman. Hey, I wonder if gay couples get this kind of talk from their parents or in-laws - does anyone out there know...? 6y

SiriGuruDevSingh It goes both ways though—my grandma, born 1892, always wished she could‘ve had a career (which her husband wouldn‘t allow beyond her midwifing “hobby”) She was terribly unhappy to be home having babies. And today women often ask me, “What, you don‘t WORK? What do you DO? Aren‘t you BORED?” We can‘t win...😂😂😂 6y

TrishB @Velvetfur as mother of a gay son I have never had this conversation 😁 but my son and his b/f are both incredibly lazy and untidy so I‘m not visiting their house if they move in together!! 6y

Velvetfur @TrishB Ah yes, my Mum is cool, thanks 😀 Well I think your son is lucky having a modern Mum like you, but I meant older generations who still hold such beliefs, I realise now I should have said 'older' gay/lesbian couples. But thank you for the insight! And good luck to your son and his bf if they ever move in together, at least one of them will have to un-lazy themselves! *aahh bless 'em* 6y

OrangeMooseReads My grandmother worked outside the home and so my mother never held this belief. My grandmother‘s SILs were not the kindest about her being a working mother. For us it‘s why don‘t you have a job? 6y

arlenefinnigan Saw the comedian Aisling Bea tweet last week "I get asked so much about having children I'm starting to worry that I had some and forgot". Lauren Laverne replied "if you do have them, they literally ask where they are and who's looking after them". 6y

I was really excited to take this dress away on vacation with me but the store left the security tag on. It's a small shop in downtown Mebane so I have to wait until I pass through there again to get it removed.(it's an hour and a half from my house) It goes GREAT with the book though. This copy is "Anne Sexton: A Self Portrait in Letters"
