The Lost Tomb
The Lost Tomb: And Other Real-Life Stories of Bones, Burials, and Murder | Douglas Preston
7 posts | 9 read | 5 to read
The first ever nonfiction collection from celebrated New Yorker contributor and #1 bestselling author Douglas Preston.? Death in Print is a collection of narrative nonfiction from essayist, thriller writer, and Authors Guild President Douglas Preston. What's it like to be the first to enter a chamber that's been sealed for thousands of years? What untold stories are buried within the archives of the Museum of Natural History? What are scientists still discovering about the day the dinosaurs died? Initially appearing in The New Yorker, WIRED, The Atlantic, and Harper's between 1995 and 2021, these pieces explore the mystery of the past with wide-eyed wonder and a strong journalistic eye. Final description TK.

This collection of articles Douglas has written for various publications over the years includes such mysteries as the dead lake high in the Himalayas, possibly cannibalistic prehistoric Native Americans, the Dyatlov Pass, and, of course, the lost Egyptian tomb.
Such a good read for those interested in archaeology, anthropology, and historic mysteries.

I am all over the globe in Preston's latest essay collection: tracking a serial killer in Florence, discovery of human remains in the Himalayas, detailing the controversies surrounding one of the oldest skeletons unearthed in N America & in my favorite piece so far (link below) a plausible explanation for the Dyatlov Pass incident:

eclectic-reader @Leftcoastzen Crazy times indeed. Reading focus can definitely be challenging, for sure. Hope you get yours back! I had a lot of trouble reading over the winter as I had a lot going on, but things are starting to calm down now. 3w

Last finished book for 2024, probably.

Non-fiction

Preston collected formerly published stories of his about mysteries and murders in this volume. Among them are the story of the Money Pit on Oak Island, or the strange murders of couples in Tuscany, and the titular Lost Tomb (KV5).

Interesting to read and, this is why it took me twice as long as usual to finish, it sent me down several Wikipedia/Google rabbit holes.

Andrew65 Excellent 👏👏👏 I love it when books do this to me. (edited) 3mo

Really interesting collection. I guess most of these pieces were previously published in the New Yorker, but they were all new to me.

39/150 I find I enjoy Preston's fiction more than his non-fiction. I'll give this a pick, because it was interesting and made me want to read more about archeology and anthropology, but it's on the low end of the scale. 3 ⭐⭐⭐
39th book finished for #Readaway2024 @DieAReader @GHABI4ROSES @Andrew65

For the most part, I am enjoying the conversational tone of the writing. These are true stories of mysteries. Some of these events I have heard of, others are new to me. The book is made up of various articles written for different publications, each chapter exploring a different topic. Douglas Preston is one of my favorite authors. I am amazed by what an interesting life he leads. This explores certain mysteries in greater detail.

Douglas Preston, the #1 bestselling author of The Lost City of the Monkey God , presents jaw-dropping true stories of Egyptian burial chambers, prehistoric ruins, pirate treasure, bizarre crimes, and more. The Lost Tomb brings together an astonishing and compelling collection of true stories about buried treasure, enigmatic murders, lost tombs, bizarre crimes, and other fascinating tales

EadieB This was a very interesting book to read. I especially liked the part about the Monster of Florence. I need to read more about the Monster as I found that aspect of the book most interesting. The last section entitled The Lost Tomb was a great read also about the Egyptian tombs. If you like real-life stories of Bones, Burials and Murders then you will love this book. I‘m looking forward to reading another book by Douglas Preston. 1y
