A historic presidential campaign changes the trajectory of a young Black man's life in the highly anticipated debut novel from one of The New Yorker's rising stars. "Brilliantly written, piercingly smart, quietly subversive, Great Expectations will be one of the talked-about novels of the year."--Colum McCann, author of Let the Great World Spin, winner of the National Book Award"Cunningham's remarkable first novel matches the scale of its namesake."--Publishers Weekly (starred review) I'd seen the Senator speak a few times before my life got caught up, however distantly, with his, but the first time I can remember paying real attention was when he delivered the speech announcing his run for the Presidency. When David first hears the Senator from Illinois speak, he feels deep ambivalence. Intrigued by the Senator's idealistic rhetoric, David also wonders how he'll balance the fervent belief and inevitable compromises it will take to become the United States' first Black president. Great Expectations is about David's eighteen months working for the Senator's presidential campaign. Along the way David meets a myriad of people who raise a set of questions--questions of history, art, race, religion, and fatherhood--that force David to look at his own life anew and come to terms with his identity as a young Black man and father in America. Meditating on politics and politicians, religion and preachers, fathers and family, Great Expectations is both an emotionally resonant coming-of-age story and a rich novel of ideas, marking the arrival of a major new writer.

A coming-of-age story about a Black man who works on Barack Obama's campaign (though Obama is not actually named). The novel had some interesting moments but didn't seem especially exciting or insightful to me.

I think this is going to be a DNF for me. Library loan is due and I just don‘t care enough to race through it. Not the book‘s fault, but I can‘t really get into the world of a fictional Obama staffer right now… 🤷‍♀️ #ToB25

Written as a memoir. I thought it was very pretentious. It was a good thing I read this on my kindle because there were several times I had to figure out a word. I used to think I had an extensive vocabulary.

There were moments I read with great interest, as when he talked about his childhood. But, even those stories would be interrupted by another tangent.

I knew this book was not for me when the word "miracle" invoked Judy Garland's singing.

Dan12 @Butterfinger May I disturb the only prettiest woman ever in the whole universe for just a second by saying hello 👋..! I‘m Dan by name and it‘s nice meeting you on here 1w

I am not as mad about this as other Litsy members seem to be. I thought this was fine. I liked that the Senator was not named. This was not his story. I prefer this - a side character story vs books that take a still alive famous person & novelize their story
The writing is good, I liked the pacing. Overall though it is a book that didn't make an impact on me and I will probably forget I read it by end of the year. I would read the author again.

AmyG I swear….I don‘t think anyone liked this book. 🤣 4w

Feeling super “meh” about this one. A “historic” presidential campaign in which Barack Obama is never named, but so well described and perfectly brought to life. I wonder why the author chose to not name him, maybe feeling that it‘s unnecessary because it‘s so obvious. Anyway, the main character, a young black man, grows on the campaign trail. He reminisces about a former pastor and other religious experiences.. One more #ToB25 book to go!

BarbaraBB Just one? Wow. I think I‘m skipping this one. 1mo
Chelsea.Poole @BarbaraBB it certainly didn‘t do much for me. Yes, the one to go is 1mo
squirrelbrain I thought it was odd he chose not to name Obama. You‘ve the chunkster left! I‘ve just finished it. I have a few to go as some aren‘t even out yet here. Plus, I keep getting distracted by the long list. 🤷‍♀️ 1mo

Chelsea.Poole @squirrelbrain indeed, it is a chonk! What did you think? Also, speaking of the longlist, can you send me your spreadsheet link? 1mo
squirrelbrain I, rather surprisingly, liked it! I posted my review. Could you let me have your email address and I‘ll send you my spreadsheet? 1mo
Chelsea.Poole @squirrelbrain Thank you! poole.chels@gmail.com (edited) 1mo
squirrelbrain Hi Chelsea - I sent you the spreadsheet over the weekend - let me know if you didn‘t get it as my email address often seems to read as junk. (Somebody trying to tell me something?!) Hope you‘re doing OK today. 😔 1mo
Chelsea.Poole @squirrelbrain thanks so much! I did get your email. I was avoiding any and all screens for the most part on Monday but my husband flipped through the channels and his voice accidentally came into my kitchen. Horrible, just horrible, terrible and mind blowing. Dangerous and I‘m getting really scared, much more than the first go around. Thanks again…I‘ll hunker down with books to distract myself. 1mo
squirrelbrain Thanks for your reply! 😊 I can‘t imagine how you‘re all feeling - it‘s bad enough watching from this distance. 😠😢 1mo

Bailedbailed

Bailed on the audiobook at 80% because I was struggling so much to pay attention. I just don‘t like “fiction” that‘s so closely based on real events. A disappointing #tob25 entry.

squirrelbrain I liked it more than you, but thought it would have been better had it steered completely away from Obama. Maybe a Black senator but in a different state, or even city. 1mo
BarbaraBB I think I‘ll skip this one 1mo
sarahbarnes I‘m going to skip this one, for the reasons you mentioned. 1mo

I'm not sure what to think of this novel. It's something if a coming-of-age story about a young man learning the contours of his world in the context of his participation in the 2008 presidential election. There's a sense of hope, disillusionment, and something like acceptance. It was interesting to look back at that time from David's perspective, but I'm not sure this one is going to stick with me. (Photo: Utah during election season 2008.)

BarbaraBB I‘m on the fence about this one. No one seems to really like it. 1mo
Larkken If there‘s a tob book that I am bouncing off the idea of harder than this one, I can‘t think of it. My mind veers away almost immediately. 1mo
Bookwormjillk This is one that didn‘t interest me when the long list came out, and I can‘t say the reviews are changing my mind! 1mo

Am listening to this audiobook and am at 2x speed to hurry it along. It just makes me sad, is all. Not a book that inspires me to slow down, though I appreciate it all the same. In fact, it‘s one of those books that I seek out reviews by esteemed literary journals, enjoy reading, and tend to agree with! So I will finish, I try not to feel smug about that LOL, and I will quickly go to the next ToB book on my list. Tagging/thanking my Litsy friend

This one really didn‘t work for me. Parts of it were good, but the structure felt choppy and a number of the religious musings felt shoehorned in, not fitting the narrative. By the end I really didn‘t care. I‘m disappointed because I lived in Detroit when Obama was elected and hearing people celebrating in the streets was extraordinary. I wish this could have channeled the actual moment. #TOB25

squirrelbrain Great review! I think I liked it better than you, but I skipped over the religious bits. (edited) 2mo

Pickpick

This has had mixed reviews but I liked it. It follows a young Black man as he works on the political campaign of a Black nominee.

I did have a couple of issues though - it was too obviously based on Obama‘s campaign which detracted from the MC‘s own story. Also, there was too much talk about religion and I lost interest / lost my way in those parts.

I‘m still glad I read it though.

#ToBlonglist

BarbaraBB Glad you liked it. It‘s still not high on my priority list… 2mo

Yawn. 🥱 This #toblonglist choice was kinda a chore. Maybe I‘ve had too much politics, but looking back at a young man‘s fictionalized work on the Obama campaign was just not something I‘m into right now. Maybe if I had read it before Harris lost I‘d feel different, but now…🤦🏻‍♀️

I don‘t think the book is poorly written I just didn‘t want to read it. If you find the premise interesting, give it a shot. #tob25

Bookwormjillk Yeah this one didn‘t appeal to me at all 3mo

squirrelbrain Meh! This is one I can hopefully borrow from the library 🤞 3mo
BarbaraBB It does sound kind of good but I can see why it lacks momentum. (edited) 3mo
HardcoverHearts I also wasn‘t a fan of this one. There wasn‘t enough distance from Obama and like in real life- he ended up dominating the page and the main narrator didn‘t stand a chance (imho). I found myself wishing it was a nonfiction behind the scenes book of the campaign or a story of a young man who got caught up in a campaign which wasn‘t so clearly Obama. And I agree, it wasn‘t poorly written at all. I get why there was a buzz about it. 3mo
