This might be my favourite of the #ToB25 books so far. This book consists of interconnected stories that bring together not just characters but past and present. I loved the New England setting and Shattuck made its history so vivid. It's been several years since I last visited the US but now I have a longing to visit New England again.

I have very strong, mixed feelings about this novel. On the one hand, it's beautiful, focused yet expansive, easy to get lost in. One section had me in tears, which rarely happens for me when reading. On the other hand, I feel cheated. I will not go into details, but I do not like how the story wraps up. So, 99% I loved, 1% really pissed me off.

BarbaraBB You‘ve made me very curious. I hope to finish it this weekend! 2d
ImperfectCJ @BarbaraBB I'll be interested to see what you think. Based on reviews, I don't think many other people had as strong a negative reaction as I did. It's possible mine was at least partly a side effect of how much I loved the rest of the book. 2d

Poor Deer: A Novel | Claire Oshetsky

Pickpick

A poignant exploration of how a child reacts to tragedy and draws conclusions about responsibility and the role that adults play in this process. My family experienced a loss when I was just shy of 4, and the ways in which Margaret attempts to make sense of her loss and the ways that it reverberates through the years feels true to me, although the circumstances were quite different.

I found this novel quirky and charming, but plodding as well. It's billed as sci-fi, but it mostly shows the insightful perspective of a woman who is different from everyone else.

Finished the #ToB25 shortlist! Some were real winners, others less so. The History of Sound is one I wouldn‘t have picked up on my own but found it to be a lovely read. Looking forward to the discussion here and the official tournament.

BkClubCare 👏👏👏🌟 5d
BkClubCare I have two yet to go. Will likely listen to The Book of George and then savor my hardcover of History of Sound. ❤️ 5d
sarahbarnes Wow, congrats! That‘s amazing! 🤩 Agree with you on History of Sound - so good. (edited) 5d

AmyG Oh wow! Great job! 5d
Suet624 Congrats!!! 5d
Ruthiella Nice work! And it isn‘t even February! 4d
Deblovestoread Well done! 4d
BarbaraBB Well done, I think you‘re the first to finish it or maybe @squirrelbrain or @Hooked_on_books ? @Megabooks ? 4d
squirrelbrain Hooray - well done! 👏 Are these in order of favourites? 4d
squirrelbrain Not me! @BarbaraBB - 3 of them aren‘t even out yet here! I‘m planning on starting Colored TV this weekend, then Beautyland should be arriving this week, The Book of George is out 31st Jan and Rejection is mid-Feb. 4d
Hooked_on_books Nice job! And I agree about The History of Sound. Lovely book, lovely cover, so glad I read it. And nope, @BarbaraBB , I have one left, The Book of Love. It has a long hold queue and I don‘t expect to get it for another month, but I‘m not excited for it, so I can wait. 😉 4d
BarbaraBB @Hooked_on_books I‘m not either but recently there have appeared some positive reviews fortunately! 4d
Megabooks Congratulations Chelsea!! 🎉🎉 I finished earlier this month @BarbaraBB . I got lucky that I had already read many that were shortlisted! My 5⭐️ are The History of Sound and The Wedding People. 👍🏻👍🏻 4d
Hooked_on_books @BarbaraBB Yes, and they make me more hopeful! I had originally put it on hold not even knowing if I would try it, but with Helen and Meg‘s endorsements, I‘ll give it a go when it comes in. 4d
Chelsea.Poole @bkclubcare almost done. And good job saving one of the best for last! @sarahbarnes and several others here look like they agree it‘s a winner 4d
Chelsea.Poole @squirrelbrain not in order of favorites, in order of “read the top already, the middle are readily available and the bottom I was waiting on to come in” lol. Maybe I should do a favorites post... I must say, that top row is pretty great, if only History of Sound, James, Wedding People, and Orbital were squeezed in there too those would be my top picks. 4d
Chelsea.Poole @Megabooks it certainly helps having a head start on some of the titles. I did as well, so I didn‘t have nearly as many to go to complete. I agree with your two five stars! Although I had several others I loved and rated 5 stars too. I‘m easily wooed oftentimes 😂 Liars was a super quick read for me I couldn‘t wait to see the conclusion. Also adore Margo. Rejection was a surprise hit for me. Loved Beautyland. I‘ll stop now 😝 4d
BkClubCare @Hooked_on_books - I enjoyed The Book of Love 💕 I found a terrific review in goodreads that amazed me with the symbolism and other interesting tidbits. Plus, it is kinda fun (way more fun than Irena Rey) 4d
Hooked_on_books @BkClubCare Another happy endorsement! That‘s so good. When I put it on hold I fully expected to either cancel it or get it, sit on it for a few days, and give it back. 😂 But now I‘ll certainly be giving it a try. 4d
Christine Awesome accomplishment! And you‘re making me want to rethink my hesitation re: Rejection! 4d
BarbaraBB Wow you really loved many of this year‘s shortlist! 4d
BarbaraBB @Megabooks I must have missed that but am not surprised. I knew you read a lot of them already with your tob-book-radar 🤍 4d
kwmg40 Congratulations, and I agree about The History of Sound! 3d

Shockingly I didn‘t hate this! I think my expectations were super low, so any enjoyment I had was a bonus. Full of strange goings-on…magical creatures and such but in our world. Heavily focused on the relationships of the 3 teenage protagonists who have died but are brought back to life by some otherworldly beings. It‘s too long but the audiobook made it manageable. And it‘s my final read for #ToB25!

sarahbarnes Agreed - it was too long for me, too. I love her short stories and this was just a so-so for me. But it was very creative, which is what I like about her. 5d
Suet624 Just got this from the library and I'm not sure whether I want to read it now! I have so many other library books to read and this book seems to be getting a tepid response. 5d
squirrelbrain Great review - I didn‘t expect much either but I think I liked it better than you. It definitely could have done with being half the length. 4d
squirrelbrain I felt the same @Suet624 - I borrowed it from the library and had seen all the meh reviews but started it and liked it enough to keep going to the end. 4d
Suet624 @squirrelbrain that‘s good to know. Thanks! 4d

There's not a lot I can say about this one without giving spoilers, but I can say that I really appreciate how it's written, and I'm looking forward to discussing the ending with my book club. It's not my favorite from the #tob25 shortlist, but I do like it.

This was excellent. Happy to finally be pleased with a #tob25 entry after a couple letdowns in a row! It‘s cleverly pulled together and the writing is beautiful (would expect nothing less from a poet author).

BarbaraBB I liked this one too! 6d
Megabooks Yes very good! Really enjoyed the way he plotted it out. 6d
