Named an Anticipated Read of 2024 by Entertainment Weekly and a Best Historical Fiction novel of 2024 by BookBub. As death stalks a gothic mansion in Miami, the lives of two women intertwine as the past and present collide in New York Times bestselling author Chanel Cleetons atmospheric new novel. With the Great War finally behind them, many Americans flock to South Florida with their sights set on making a fortune. When wealthy industrialist Robert Barnes and his wife, Anna, build Marbrisa, a glamorous estate on Biscayne Bay, they become the toast of the newly burgeoning society. Anna and Robert appear to have it all, but in a town like Miami, appearances can be deceiving, and one scandal can change everything. Years later following the tragic death of her parents in Havana, Carmen Acosta journeys to Marbrisa, the grand home of her estranged older sister, Carolina, and her husband, Asher Wyatt. On the surface, the gilded estate looks like paradise, but Carmen quickly learns that nothing at Marbrisa is as it seems. The house has a treacherous legacy, and Carmens own life is soon in jeopardy . . . unless she can unravel the secrets buried beneath the mansions facade and stop history from repeating itself.

After just arriving home from a very hot week at Disney World, the first sentence of this book made sense. “I cannot for the life of me imagine why anyone would want to live in Florida.” However, the mansion in this novel sounded absolutely beautiful, and definitely took on a life of its own. It definitely wasn‘t one of the more interesting books I‘ve read. I‘m not really into mysteries.

This book is a bit different from this author, and she built this mystery well. I was constantly falling for all the hints and suspected everyone. I really liked the female protagonists in both timelines, their feelings up and down, and human. The Gothic tale was such an entertaining read.

A so so atmospheric story told with two time lines and two mysteries, overall was entertaining but wasn‘t as good as Mexican Gothic or The Daughter of Doctor Moreau

I really love when Chanel Cleeton‘s books are wrapped in Cuban/American history so I was disappointed that we didn‘t experience in real time Carolina and Carmine growing up in Havana. As a mystery it was a bit of a slow burn but still satisfying. What I liked most was the atmospheric 1920s and 40s Miami vibe. And the peacocks - if you‘ve had daily experiences with a pride of peacocks (I have) you‘ll appreciate their characterization here.

Danay I totally got the peacock references too! 😉 I‘m also with you on wanting to know the backstories. Overall satisfying mystery though. 7mo
marleed @Danay Haha, for 5 years in the early mornings I entered a gate at Fort Sam Houston where a pride of peacocks merrily strode through their days. I always turned off TPR or my audiobook because the peacocks were so entertaining. They reminded me of cats fighting. 7mo

The problem with auto-buy authors is just that: I buy without even checking to see what it's about. I ended up disappointed that this was a murder mystery and not the HF I've come to love; hence the so-so rating. However! Cleeton's writing is so engaging it saw me through a genre that isn't really my cup of tea.

I've found a new author for me. Though she has written a few books I've not read any until now. This book was great. Part history, thriller, mystery, love story, and a touch gothic.

I enjoyed this book from the very start. It is one of the best I've read. This book has a lot going on and I highly recommend it.

I've been waiting almost a year for this!!

I need to just rant for a second: I now officially hate Barnes and Noble after years of simmering anger with them. The local store I've been going to since moving to CO 4 years ago is The. Worst. I have yet to buy a book from them that isn't marred or damaged (including NR on release day). Today I had to search for this bc it was shelved no where near new releases AND this was the only copy out🤬⬇️

TheBookgeekFrau Luckily I have a lot more bookstore options here than I did in NY. I contacted one that opened a year ago about pre-ordering new releases. I'd rather give my money to them. I just hate that they're not a mile from house like B&N is 😣 OK, rant over. Thanks for listening 💕 (edited) 8mo
