pickI very much enjoyed this collection of short stories. The prose is lovely, Gina Chung is a master storyteller for sure. I don‘t normally like reading short stories, but in this case I found myself engrossed in each - be it a slice of life, or a magical tale. Would definitely read more by this author.
Sometimes the mantis goes on dates. She's never disappointed by the males she meets, because she never expects much from them. The sex is usually fine-adequate at best and unremarkable at worst. She enjoys the click she feels when they mount and socket themselves into her, as well as the crackling sound their heads make when she pincers her mouth around them. The males seem grateful to die....

2. A Green Tree Frog fell right in front of me in a parking lot. I caught and brought him to a tree area. Poor little thing. He was so cute.

pickI‘m so glad I stumbled upon this short story collection, as it turned out to be excellent. It even worked well on audio, as the stories are quite varied and each has a different audio narrator, making the divisions distinct. @Megabooks I think you would like this.

A powerhouse collection of short stories that announces itself right away with a story titled “How to Eat Your Own Heart” before then interrogating motherhood, family, mother-daughter relationships, love, diaspora, tradition, culture and more in a fascinating, compelling group of stories. Once I started reading, I could not put it down. A wonderful collection and perfect for anyone who enjoys reading short stories. Highly recommended.
I bought this book because I read a rave review on NPR‘s website…the fact it comes along with a really fabulous cover is a definite bonus!
