This second book in the Aubrey-Maturin series was a favorite in June 2022. They are great action/adventure that I didn‘t initially think I‘d enjoy, but it turns out I do! 😅

I need to add the third book to my #SeriesLove2023 list!

#12Booksof2022

Andrew65 I love all the different sea adventure books. 2y
Ruthiella @Andrew65 I‘m glad I tried it because I didn‘t realize l love sea adventure too until then. 😂 2y
Andrew65 @Ruthiella I would also recommend the Kydd Series by Julian Goodwin 2y
Ruthiella @Andrew65 Thanks! Well noted. 👍 2y

The 2nd Aubrey–Maturin book did not disappoint. The battles are weirdly thrilling even though I don‘t know my main sail from my mizzenmast. Jack and Stephen‘s friendship nearly comes to an end over a woman and Jack‘s luck seems to be at an all time low hounded for debt on land and in an impossible ship on sea. The restart of the Napoleonic wars will either make or break him.

Read for #Booked2022 Nautical Novel @ #RoaringWolf category “Flag”.

Cinfhen Fabulous review and fantastic graphics 💕 3y
Ruthiella @Cinfhen Thanks! ☺️ 3y
LeahBergen I feel the same way about the battles in these books. 😆 3y

batsy "my main sail from my mizzenmast"—I'm with you there ? Nice review! I follow some bookish people on twitter who always talk about this series fondly & it makes me want to give it a try. 3y
Ruthiella @batsy The draw for me is the two main characters. The are so well drawn, I feel as if I really know them. 3y

I felt the audiobook brought this book to life. Quite the adventure and quite a big book. A good book but so far this isn‘t my favourite sea adventure series.

Bookwomble I was fully prepared to love this series, did enjoy the first book, but gave up on this one after too many pages of fox hunting toffs and no maritime action. I'm sure it would've improved if I'd stuck with it, but I couldn't be bothered. 3y
Ruthiella @Bookwomble I just finished it. I agree, the story is better when they‘re on the sea. If you‘re ever inclined to pick it back up, there is a particularly fantastic battle much later when Jack‘s prowess really shines. (edited) 3y

Starting on book 2 in the Aubrey / Maturin Series. Hear such great things but wasn‘t overly enamoured by book 1. Perhaps the series takes some time to grow on you.

Ruthiella I‘m about to start this one too! For me, audio is the way to go. It allows me to accept all the sailing terms that I don‘t understand! In print, I find the jargon confusing. (edited) 3y
Andrew65 @Ruthiella I agree with this. 3y

1. Patrick O‘Brian is pretty singular, I think; he manages to be poetically verbose, funny, epic, and meaningful in turns, with a classic-literature feel that‘s still extremely readable.
2. Count the Stars by Barbara Cartland. I picked it up as research while I was trying to write a romance novel, and ended up actually enjoying it.

The 2nd Aubrey/Maturin book is A LOT.

We kick off with a light riff on Pride & Prejudice, then the boys are off to France to escape Jack's tremendous debt.

When war is declared with France, Jack must escape over hundreds of miles of enemy territory disguised as Flora the Dancing Bear.

Then back to sea on an awful ship which he wrecks but somehow turns this into a victory. Plus a woman comes between hetero lifemates Jack and Stephen.

Fun!

TobeyTheScavengerMonk Friends, I want you to know that I tried very hard to include Cassandra the alcoholic gibbon who lives in the rigging of the HMS Lively in this review, but I was defeated by the character limit. Also Stephen somehow thinks it's a good idea to bring a beehive onto a naval vessel. 6y
readordierachel 😆 Is that a Checkov's gun situation? The beehive is introduced and then pays off later? 6y
TobeyTheScavengerMonk @readordierachel Actually it plays out more like a wacky sitcom plot. The covers of these books make them look like boring nautical histories but they are frequently and quite intentionally just goofy fun. 6y
LeahBergen Oh, man. I LOVED this book. 😆😆 6y
SenatorMothma I've only tried to read the first in this series, and my problem is when they're at sea, it's great and I'm captivated. When they're ashore, it drags and I bail 😫 buuut this one sounds much more entertaining! 6y

Reading/rereading Aubrey/Maturin, which I first encountered in college and hope to finish completely this time around. Dean King's companion books will be an essential part of the voyage #FridayReads

Read Master and Commander a few years ago and liked it a lot. Finally picked this up after sort of forgetting WHAT I liked about the first one. Basically this is first-rate historical fiction. I can‘t believe how smooth the naval terminology goes down. Hope it doesn‘t take so long to read the next in the series.

AceOnRoam We are reading this series on a Goodreads group if you want to join us. We start book 3 in Feb. 7y
twohectobooks @AceOnRoam Oh my goodness! What will the reading pace be? I‘m very tempted. 7y
AceOnRoam @twohectobooks we are reading one a month. We did take a 2 month break in Dec & Jan 7y

Gonna do this 6x6 #TBRbingo throughout 2018. It‘s all stuff I‘m already planning to read but kinda doubt I‘ll get to it all, so we‘ll see what happens! No free spaces, hehe.

All of these Aubrey and Maturin books are wonderful in their exciting stories & depiction of friendship, but I often get bogged down in the gratuitous nautical detail. I love the story, but it takes me far longer to read one of these than I take to read most books. Still, looking forward to # 3!

If you like solid history and a rousing story, this is for you. Hornblower redone with better history and amusing writing. Read one and you will want them all.
