Author's Guide to Murder
Author's Guide to Murder | Beatriz Williams, Karen White, Lauren Willig
6 posts | 3 read | 1 reading | 9 to read
Agatha Christie meets Murder, She Wrote in this witty locked room mystery and literary satire by New York Times bestselling team of novelists: Beatriz Williams, Lauren Willig, and Karen White. There's been a sensational murder at historic Castle Kinloch, a gothic fantasy of grey granite on a remote island in the Highlands of Scotland. Literary superstar Brett Saffron Presley has been found dead--under bizarre circumstances--in the castle tower's book-lined study. Years ago, Presley purchased the castle as a showpiece for his brand and to lure paying guests with a taste for writerly glamour. Now it seems, the castle has done him in...or, possibly, one of the castle's guests has. Detective Chief Inspector Euan McIntosh, a local with no love for this literary American show-off (or Americans in general), finds himself with the unenviable task of extracting statements from three American lady novelists. The prime suspects are Kat de Noir, a slinky, sexy erotica writer; Cassie Pringle, a Southern mom of six juggling multiple cozy mystery series; and Emma Endicott, a New England blue blood and author of critically acclaimed historical fiction. The women claim to be best friends writing a book together: a historical novel about the castle's lurid past and its debauched laird, who himself ended up creatively murdered. But the authors' stories about how they know Brett Saffron Presley don't quite line up, and the detective is getting increasingly suspicious. Why did the authors really come to Castle Kinloch? Is the murder of the long-ago laird somehow connected with the playboy author's unfortunate demise? And what really happened the night of the great Kinloch ceilidh, when Brett Saffron Presley skipped the folk dancing for a rendezvous with death? A crafty locked-room mystery, a pointed satire about the literary world, and a tale of unexpected friendship and romance--this novel has it all, as only three bestselling authors can tell it!

Bailedbailed

This might be a case of a “me issue” not a “book issue”, but I could not get into this. The three main characters didn‘t have much depth and I couldn‘t get a firm grip on the genre; some parts are fluffy, others are very dark. Perhaps a good one to borrow from the library before spending 30ish dollars. #HailTheBail

The beginning of this book at reminds me of the slapstick banter the authors have with each other. I can hear their voices when I read this. It‘s their fifth collaboration together. It‘s a totally different type of writing than the other four. It‘s goofy but fun so far.
I had such a wonderful weekend at this Author event. If you‘re ever in Newport RI, Charter Books is a beautiful and friendly bookstore. I had fun cosplaying in plaid!

I‘ve had such a fun weekend at this author event in Newport, RI! The authors have such a great banter.
This is their 5th book together. The food & drink have been marvelous- both at the event and in Rhode Island.
The themed drink was a Kinloch Kiss- a French 75, but with scotch 🍹
We were serenaded by bagpipes 🎶

tpixie @lynneamch the scotch was a fun twist! 🥃 It‘s been fun. I‘ve worn plaid all weekend. The authors have been friendly and it‘s been fun being around book people. @Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks walking up to the 1st event and hearing Scottish music for a book based in Scotland was really fun. 3w

3 authors join forces to write a novel to defy all expectations. When they arrive at their Scottish castle retreat, the American in charge mysteriously drops dead. W/ everybody hiding something, it‘s up to the 3 of them to clear their names.

Was this a little ridiculous? Yes. Did it still make me laugh? Also yes. The characters are pretty flat & a slow start, until the body drops. Then everything became a lot more interesting. 🌕🌕🌕🌕🌑

BookmarkTavern @tpixie How fun! I hope they‘re as fun in person as their writing makes them seem. 😁 3w
tpixie @BookmarkTavern they have a great banter. I just started reading the book and Chapter 1 has things in it that are part of their real origin story- 3 authors meet in a bar & they tell one of their editors about the idea of the three of them collaborating together on a book and she thinks it‘s a terrible idea - are 2 examples. 3w
BookmarkTavern @tpixie That‘s absolutely adorable! I haven‘t read any of them before, so I‘m excited to check out their individual works now. 3w

Pre-ordering a book when I‘m supposed to be following a strict budget doesn‘t count, right? Is that we as a reading community decided? 😅 I don‘t want to wait until November for this! -grabby hands-

MaureenMc This sounds so fun! (And yes, you are correct re: preorders. 😁) 8mo
Aims42 @MaureenMc SO fun sounding! I did a double take with the authors because this seems a like a new genre take for them. I‘m here for it though 😁 Lol! Thank you for the confirmation on the preorder question, I thought so 😉 8mo
