I love everything about John Irving. It's always fascinating to go back and read a famous author's early works to see how they developed and matured over time. This was Irving's first novel, written when he was just 25, and so many of his hallmarks were already present - the complex character sketches, the psychosexual drama, Vienna, bears, etc. Not as fully realized as some of his later works, but well beyond what many writers ever accomplish.

John Irving‘s first novel starts in with his bear theme that reoccurs in many of his novels.When young writer is finding his voice , well, it may not be his best work , it hints of themes /greatness ahead. I read it long ago and was not blown away. But I am blown away by this cover ! This is the first paperback edition from 1970, the novel was published in 1968 in hardcover.Dig that distinctive 70‘s style.Note the easy rider reference, MARKETING.

When i first discovered john irving many moons ago i hoovered up his back catalogue including this very early novel which references one of his early themes - bears. A little bit of artistic licence on the meaning of 'setting'.

Cathythoughts I have this on my kindle.. recommended by a friend. I‘m not sure if I‘ll like it 🤷🏻‍♀️only one way to find out I guess 6y

andrew61 @Cathythoughts it's such a long time since i read it i couldn't advise Cathy. I keep meaning to reread his books as he is a favourite author but always worry that they won't be the same as when i first read them. If you do enjoy it i may be encouraged to try it again. 6y

swishandflick I think you still see every post in chronological order. I understood this to mean that if the Litsy account "features" a post that they want to make sure everyone sees (i.e like with the server migration), that post would display up top. Not that they restrict the other posts you're seeing. 6y

jfalkens @swishandflick I had it on before, that's what I thought it meant too. I could have been wrong tho, sometimes for following thousands of Littens my feed was short. 6y

My old friend was raving about this last night. So I just had to get it 🙄🙃. Ofcorse I did, it‘s ready & waiting on my kindle. Has anyone read this ? I trust his taste , it will be good.

Andrew65 I have only read one John Irving book, The World According to Garp, which I loved. Do need to read more by him and do own Son of the Circus.

Who here sets books free? My place of choice for setting them free is The Monon Coffee Company Broad Ripple Branch in Indianapolis, Indiana. All I know is that in 2017 I have to get myself in gear and free more books. The Cay, which I just read is going to be set free. And yes Little Free Libraries count in setting books free. 🐸🐙

tpixie Yes! I write on the inside "take me home and read me". I used to have stickers. There used to be a website BookCrossing in which you could register your books u leave and track them. It looks like the URL doesn't work anymore. 7y

Zelma I move too often to keep a huge library; a few rough moves in my early 20s cured me of book hoarding. I usually donate to my library for their bookstore, sometimes leave them on the free shelf at a favorite coffee shop, or pass select titles to friends who would enjoy them. I use to use Bookmooch but their selection is not great. I probably have about 20 unused credits. 7y
