Afterward: A Novel | Jennifer Mathieu
A tragic kidnapping leads to an unlikely friendship in this novel about finding light in the midst of darkness from the author of The Truth About Alice. When eleven-year-old Dylan Anderson is kidnapped, his subsequent rescue leads to the discovery of fifteen-year-old Ethan Jorgensen, who had gone on a bike ride four years earlier and had never been seen again. Dylan's older sister, Caroline, can't help but wonder what happened to her brother, who has nonverbal autism and is not adjusting well to life back home. There's only one person who knows the truth: Ethan. But Ethan isn't sure how he can help Caroline when he is fighting traumatic memories of his own captivity. Both Caroline and Ethan need a friend, however, and their best option just might be each other.

Shows what life is like for kidnapped kids and their families once they return home. Especially heartbreaking for Dylan who is nonverbal autistic. Everyone heals at their own rate, and it can take a while for the traumatic memories to surface ❤️‍🩹

Caroline‘s little brother is kidnapped and when he is rescued, Ethan, was also rescued. Ethan has been living with the kidnapper since he was a child and is now 16 years old.

This story was slow going but still intense. My only problem was I wish we got a process of healing with Caroline‘s little brother, who is autistic. I enjoyed Ethan‘s healing progress and his friendship with Caroline.

Although I wouldn't recommend this novel to middle school aged kiddos, this book was a fantastic account of what it's like to recover from trauma.

There were parts of this book I liked and parts I didn't. I'm kind of frustrated that the author didn't really address more things, but she did a good job in portraying her characters. It was dark, and I think this book was meant mainly to show the healing process for different terrible situations. Could have been more, but what was there was good. Friendship ftw

Such a good read. It was well written and researched. A gut wrenching tale from 2 families that experienced a kidnapping. The unlikely friendship of 2 teens who need each other to help them cope with the aftermath. I was unsatisfied with the ending, it was quite abrupt and I wanted more.

Story of two families connected in a tragic way -- each of them had a son who was kidnapped and then returned. One of the kidnapping victims forms a tentative bond with the sister of the other victim, who blames herself. Really moving!

Fantastic!!! Well researched and such an interesting and heartbreaking story about trauma and the recovery of both the victims and their families. It was also uplifting and sweet in many parts. Highly recommend!
