Scarlet Gospels
Scarlet Gospels | Clive Barker
"The Scarlet Gospels" takes readers back many years to the early days of two of Barker's most iconic characters in a battle of good and evil as old as time: The long-beleaguered detective Harry D'Amour, investigator of all supernatural, magical, and malevolent crimes faces off against his formidable, and intensely evil rival, Pinhead, the priest of hell. Barker devotees have been waiting for "The Scarlet Gospels" with bated breath for years, and it's everything they've begged for and more. Bloody, terrifying, and brilliantly complex, fans and newcomers alike will not be disappointed by the epic, visionary tale that is "The Scarlet Gospels." Barker's horror will make your worst nightmares seem like bedtime stories. The Gospels are coming. Are you ready?

"And you're rude. I swear, the bigger the bully, the smaller the dick." -Norma Paine

This book is definitely not what I expected. It's got moments of comedy and moments of horror. Pinhead is back with a vengence.

This book had mixed reviews but I wanted to give it a shot and I'm so glad I did. This book has been a quick read and I hope Clive Barker dives back into the Hell Priest. Honestly, I want another novel.

I'm a fan of the original Hellraiser movie, so it was nice to get another story featuring Pinhead from Clive Barker himself. All the movies after the first two had no involvement from him and it shows.

Birdsong28 Loved the tagged book it really scared me. 5y
phantomx Is this book part of a series? 5y
speljamr @phantomx No, but the characters show up in several of his other stories, or have other books of their own. 5y

I can forgive the overly sexual (tends to come with the horror genre, it seems, although Barker may have been watching porn and writing simultaneously). What I couldn't seem to get past was some of the humor. When a story takes place in hell, constant sexual innuendos and other jokes tend to take away from the horror. Definitely a little disappointed 😔

Barker‘s masterful prose is in full effect, and although the story suffers a bit with the choices made in regards to the titular “Pinhead,” the addition of “The Last Illusion‘s” Harry D‘Amour and the shear brutality of events make TSG an enjoyable read for anyone who waited for Barker to follow up his masterpiece, The Hellbound Heart.

Reggie So the first 50 pages where all the magicians get it.....BRUTAL!!! Lol. I kinda wanna read more about what Lucifer gets up to in our world. 6y
EyesOnly34 @Reggie Right?! Bloody and wild! Yeah, me too! Thought the same thing! 6y
llcoolnate I'm about 7/8 done. One thing I didn't like is the humor. Am I alone in this? I just felt like it made the horror less believable and silly. Sure, someone's head is getting torn off, but they're making a sex joke next paragraph, so no biggie.. 5y
EyesOnly34 It‘s a very off kilter book in itself, so I do see what you mean. The humor is a bit off in spots, but I could kinda forgive it since weird levity would almost be a necessity for people when dealing with such insane things. 5y

Lazy New Years Day reading of haunted New York in the rain while enjoying a hot Melbourne day from a hammock.

Enjoyable read so far, not amazing but fun and descriptive, haunted and hellish. Enjoying reading of the Cenobites again.

I‘m giving this a pick for the perverse menagerie of images Barker is able to conjure up and that the first half of the book hooked me. Who knew I would be so tickled that Pinhead creating origami cranes with incantations written on them, used to kill off his whole order, would tickle me so much. Half this book takes place in hell and that is where there was so much potential. I just felt Barker lost a little something for me on this back half.

I will always love Clive Barker for opening up worlds for a small town teenager who couldn‘t imagine himself out of a paper bag. He‘s always been so sensory but the 34 page prologue is rough. Pinhead shows up and wipes out 6 magicians. Some by pulling them apart with his hooks, one by punching a small hole in his head and inserting a small dead piece of himself that turn into worms who eat him from the inside out. Brutal. Only on pg54/466.

TrishB I enjoyed this revisit with Pinhead. I loved Clive for the same reason too. He was new, exciting and innovative. Ohhh and very handsome, I was definitely a little bit smitten by him 💕 but mainly his brain and imagination 😁 lucky enough to meet him several times. 6y
Reggie @TrishB I love that story with you and your mom in line for a signing where she says what a looker he is. Lol 6y
TrishB I was remembering that as I was writing. 😁 Embarrassing at the time but makes me smile now. 6y

I‘m being naughty and starting one of my picks from my #makemereadit stack. While I know this book isn‘t the winner and I‘m totally reading them out of order, I‘m in a bit of a crisis. This is the only book I have left with me while I‘m out of town. Desperate situation calls for desperate measures!

Reggie Have you read the others that have to do with this book? I think it‘s Everville and the Great and Secret Show. I think he takes Kisson and a detective from them and has them meet up in here. 6y
wellreadredhead @Reggie I haven‘t, I‘ve only read The Hellbound Heart 6y

This was actually my first Clive Barker and I loved it. Still enjoyed it on this second go around. Barker's imagination is stellar and I love how real and human everyone is in spite of everything.

It was ok as a Clive Barker book, but not so good as a Pinhead one... I was expecting more.

The Scarlet Gospels, Clive Barker's sequel to both The Hellbound Heart and his Harry D'Amour stories, was probably my most anticipated book of the last ten years. Not only would it give an ending to the character known as Pinhead, but it was also Barker's first adult novel since Coldheart Canyon. Gospels delivers on its premise, and with enough budget it would make a great Hellraiser movie. But it's not Barker's finest work so I give it ⭐️⭐️⭐️1/2.
