I have two that I would use to teach my reluctant reader students in middle school: PINK AND SAY by Patricia Polacco and FAITHFUL ELEPHANTS by Yukio Tsuchiya. The first one occurs during the Civil War, and the second one during WW2. And yes, both are #tearjerkers. 🧡💜💛

MissyD Ohhh. I love pink and say. I will have to read the other one soon 1y

This HF book would be a great RA because it tells a beautiful story about two kid soldiers on opposite sides of the Civil War, that meet, help each other, and become friends. It‘s a wonderful story to use to not only discuss the Civil War at an elementary level, but also to talk about friendships and not judging others.
UDL 3.1 activate or supply background knowledge would be perfect to discuss what kids may know about the Civil War, and

Chaseb supply some information before reading.

DrSpalding I believe historical fiction is correct however the individuals in the story were real people. Scholastic is a high-quality resource that you should continue to use. I like the idea of filling in the graphic organizer which certainly would meet English learner strategy seven. 4y

This HF picture book by Patricia Polacco retells a story passed down to her about the trials and tribulations of two soldiers named Sheldon Russell Curtis (Say) who was a white soldier and Pinkus Aylee (Pink) who was a black soldier that was involved in the Civil War. Say was wounded in battle and Pink found him, brought him to shelter, and helped him recover.

sbombasi With the goal of surviving and winning the war, getting back into the war was a scary thing to revisit. This story involves the history between Confederate and Union troops, colored and white people, and fighting “the sickness” of slavery.

This would be good for an RA/PR, students can discuss with their partner the theme of the book and knowledge gained about the Civil War. #ucflae3414f19

This site gives a great lesson plan for text-to-text connection using other Civil War-related books along with this one to better understand the historical aspect. Students will create and illustrate a Civil War ABC book using information collected.

Pink and Say is a HF picture book written and illustrated by Patricia Polacco. I think this book would be very good to use as a RA in a classroom grades 4-6. It won the 1994 Irma S. and James H. Black Award in Children‘s Literature and the 1996 Maine Student Book Award for Grades 4-8.

katiehamlin This is a story set during the American Civil War, and it is about a black soldier who rescues a white soldier in a time when an interaction like this one was not acceptable. It‘s good for teaching students about this time period and about the roles the different races played during that time. #UCFLAE3414F19

katiehamlin The EL strategy I would use for this book is 5, teach technical vocabulary supporting key concepts. This would be necessary since there is a possibility that some of the students don‘t know anything about the American Civil War. 5y
katiehamlin The UDL principle I would use is 3.1 (activate or supply background knowledge) for the same reason I would use the EL principle. If students don‘t have background knowledge of this topic they will be confused throughout the book and their comprehension won‘t be as high as it could be.

Pink and Say by Patricia Polacco, 1994. This is a wonderful story about two young boys during the civil war. It‘s emotional and moving and really brings you right into the war and their experiences. It tells of a boy named Pinkus Aylee who died before he could tell his story so his friend Say told it for him.

I read this book growing up and I always liked to read it. It tells the story of how a young black soldier saves the life of a white soldier and shows the reader how unjust and cruel slavery was, and how senseless war can be. Very emotional.

Pink and Say by Patricia Polacco is a historical fiction picture book. Pink and Say won the 1997 West Virginia Children‘s Book award. The characters in this book are loosely based on real people who fought in the Civil War. Pink and Say are two teenage boys fighting for the Union army, and they temporarily take haven at Pink‘s mothers home. They are eventually captured and taken prisoner by the Confederate army.

audrey.wilson Pink and Say works well for a think-aloud/read aloud because the language follows a heavy African American dialect. The story provides a more significant impact when read according to the author's language use. The reason this should be a think aloud is that throughout the book there are many Civil war terms and historical events require elaboration.   (edited) 6y

Scholastic provides a high-quality, engaging, and content-rich lesson that teaches children about the civil war through literature and personal analysis.

audrey.wilson The ESOL strategies that follow this lesson are: teach note-taking strategy (9) and offer a variety of reference materials at the students‘ instructional level (29). The note-take strategy follows the lesson plan and KWL charts. The variety of materials involves reading many different books at different levels regarding the Civil war. (edited) 6y

audrey.wilson The UDL strategy promote understanding across languages (2.4) aligns with Pink and Say. The reason I believe 2.4 aligns with Pink and Say is because the language use and different dialects are not typically used/heard today. It is essential students recognize the existence of dialects in languages and how to read and comprehend such dialects.

kelseymccormick @audrey.wilson What a cute cat! I love how your resource is integrating literacy and social studies. These two subjects can be taught hand in hand if done correctly with high quality literature. This is wonderful because teachers don‘t have enough time throughout the day and often push social studies off. Great post and resources! 6y

I don't cry much at books but Pink and Say gets me every time. Some years ago I was reading it to a classroom and warned that the last time I'd read it aloud, I'd cried 4 times. The kids listened raptly and at the end a boy raised his hand and said, "Um, you cried four times again." LOL #somethingforsept #mademecry
