A Brief History of Misogyny
A Brief History of Misogyny: The World's Oldest Prejudice | Jack Holland
13 posts | 9 read | 69 to read
In this compelling, powerful book, highly respected writer and commentator Jack Holland sets out to answer a daunting question: how do you explain the oppression and brutalization of half the world's population by the other half, throughout history? The result takes the reader on an eye-opening journey through centuries, continents and civilizations as it looks at both historical and contemporary attitudes to women. Encompassing the Church, witch hunts, sexual theory, Nazism and pro-life campaigners, we arrive at today's developing world, where women are increasingly and disproportionately at risk because of radicalised religious belief, famine, war and disease. Well-informed and researched, highly readable and thought-provoking, this is no outmoded feminist polemic: it's a refreshingly straightforward investigation into an ancient, pervasive and enduring injustice. It deals with the fundamentals of human existence -- sex, love, violence -- that have shaped the lives of humans throughout history. The answer? It's time to recognize that the treatment of women amounts to nothing less than an abuse of human rights on an unthinkable scale. A Brief History of Misogyny is an important and timely book that will make a long-lasting contribution to the efforts to improve those rights throughout the world.

The best book I‘ve ever gotten from an audible daily deal. #feministfriday #readingresolutions

My fav quote from the intro: “A common response from other men when my father told them what he was working on was an assumption that he was writing some sort of defense of misogyny, a reaction he found startling.

Another common response was surprise that such a book should be written by a man... ‘Why not?‘ he would say, ‘it was invented by men.‘”

Completely forgot to review this book that I finished yesterday. I mostly listened to it while out walking Walter, meaning I missed stuff here and there when other people or dogs showed up, but it was still a very interesting and somewhat depressing book. Highly recommended!

LauraBeth Never a pic where Walter isn't adorable 💕 8y
tricours @LauraBeth the only place he agrees to walk in is the forest! 8y

This was one of the hardest, most important books I've read in a long time. It made me mad, sad, and numb. More than anything it made me truly understand what constitutes misogyny, which means I can question and rebel, because fundamentally it's BS.

Tcip Hell yes! Good stuff! 8y
Sydsavvy Thanks for sharing. Sounds as important as this one: 8y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @Tcip Thanks - it is definitely a timely book! 8y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @Sydsavvy Yes - I added the herstory book to my TBR. it would be a good match to the misogyny one. Thanks! 8y

"In this dualistic vision of the world, the hated group represents "the other" and the women of that group are usually seen as the most contemptible aspect of the perceived "otherness," that is its feminine form.

The history of the last hundred years is a depressing chronicle of atrocities carried out under the influence of this intoxicatingly simple view of the world as being divided into "us" and "them.""

BarbaraTheBibliophage "From the rake of Nanking, then the capital of China, by the Japanese in 1937 to the Hindu nationalist massacre of Muslims in Western India in March 2002, vulnerable women have suffered from the misogyny that always accompanies the racial and religious hatred stirred up by nationalism." 8y
Owlizabeth I have this on audio and can't bring myself to listen to it in case I have a ragestroke while driving. 8y
KVanRead 😡 8y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @Owlizabeth I'm listening to the audio as well. It's been difficult to manage emotionally. But it's SO important to understand the whole story. Try it in small bites. 8y

Not too far into this yet, but am gaining valuable insights to current events. Author just helped me connect Pandora and Helen of Troy to women in politics and power. Fascinating!

the_hibernator Thanks for this great title! I'll add it ti my tbr 8y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @the_hibernator You're welcome. It's a bit dry but mostly very interesting! 8y

BookishFeminist 🙌🏼 yes! Great option 8y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @BookishFeminist ?? CNN commentator just said "the race was won by throwing away some of us." Devastating. 8y
BookishFeminist @BarbaraTheBibliophage It's true. The people that want to burn it to the ground are privileged. 8y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @BookishFeminist Yes, in the sense of being the white majority. But so many who think he's "for" them are actually marginalized now or will be once his administration begins. 8y
queerbookreader @BarbaraTheBibliophage Very good suggestion. Try to get a little bit of peace tonight (I'm reading a book about tea to calm down) 💝 8y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @lemonlime799 I need to go to bed and unhook from media too. Sleep may be elusive. 8y
queerbookreader @BarbaraTheBibliophage My mom and I had to turn off the tv and go to bed. Do what you need to do 💚 8y
Suet624 That's it! That's what I've been trying to say without success - "this is not the world I thought I was living in." 8y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @Suet624 Glad I could help put words to your feelings. Wish it wasn't these feelings or these words though. 💙 8y
geodynamical_nonfiction If you turn off the TV programming, the world isn't so scary. 8y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @geodynamical Actually I'm not a big news watcher. I have significant hearing loss and get more news from the written word. It does help! 8y

Today's Daily Deal sounds like it could be interesting - only it has NO reviews on Goodreads!

BookishFeminist It's on there with several reviews! The titles got messed up but here's the link: (it's the same book) https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/597662?source=ebfg_sms 8y
tricours @BookishFeminist aah, thanks! I've corrected it on GR now (I wish Litsy would allow users to add and fix stuff, the database here is a - very sparse - mess) 8y
BarbaraTheBibliophage I snatched this book right up! Already had it marked as to-read on GR and here. 8y
