Loved! Lots going on here, capturing a time and place very specific to the early 2000s, and yet still very true today. It made me cry, and was also at times very funny. Would like to read again

#2022Book33
When I started this book, it felt like one of those where all of the characters are just a little too eccentric to be believable. But as the story went on, it became clear that their awkwardness and unusual behavior is due to their past and current traumas. Also, this book includes one of the most relatable descriptions of grief I've read in a long time.

I don‘t even know how to review this one. There were times I thought the writing was brilliant, but then at other times I thought the author was trying too hard. But overall, this novel just did not come together. Lots of storylines that had so much potential in and of themselves, but that really had nothing to do with one another, most of which were unresolved, and seemed to just be compiled into a single book. I hated the ending.

The flow of the book felt very disconnected--it was like reading several different books awkwardly knitted together into a very loose whole. It read as if the author wasn't quite sure what she wanted to write about, so she threw in everything but the kitchen sink. Also, this book bored the life out of me for the first 200 pages. And then several major things happened, but none of them were very believable and they all felt rather random. Meh.

MariettaSG Thanks for useful reviews 4y
Amiable @MariettaSG Just my opinion, of course! Don‘t let my crankiness deter you. 😀 4y
Coleen I just finished this book on audio and it‘s like you wrote my review. I feel the exact same. 3y
Amiable @Coleen It‘s always a great feeling when someone totally gets what you‘re thinking, isn‘t it? 🙌🏼 3y

I knew this would be a four slice of pie 🥧 book while reading because “quality of writing” which I can‘t define or adequately identify but feel it when I absorb it... and then the ending. I thought the ending was perfect. So big yes on a sad melancholic book about weighty thoughts but! weighty before Drumpf weariness...

Mamashep Oh that funeral scene! 6y

I didn't get this book!

heylaurenmack I read that book for a course in college and don‘t remember much about it at the moment but I do remember a full fledged yelling argument happening in class. 7y
MarticaMustRead Same!! 7y
KimHM After reading the description, I'm wondering how I missed it. A book picked by both the Orange prize committee and Real Simple is intriguing, not to mention it causing a "full fledged yelling argument" in a (literature @heylaurenmack ?) class. 7y
DrexEdit Oh dear! I just started this one for one of my book challenges! I hope it's not too onerous! 😨 7y
Mcoun @DrexEdit, I'll be interested in your take on it. I'm feeling that I must have missed something if it caused arguments in a lit class. 7y

I loved all about it. The main characters, their story, the thoughts behind it, the themes, the humor, the dialogues, the twists, the end. I didn't know Moore but I am definitely going to read more by her soon. Suggestions are very welcome. #1001books Picture: the overnight ferry from Greece to Italy

This book started out very slow for me...and at times it was a bit hard to follow. The last 100 pages were much easier to read but it's not high on my list of recommendations.
