Absolute Batman Vol. 1: the Zoo
Absolute Batman Vol. 1: the Zoo | Scott Snyder
6 posts | 3 read
Without the wealth, without the cave, he's still the Absolute Dark Knight! Meet Batman as you've never seen him before, reimagined with a modern origin story at the hands of superstar creative team Scott Snyder and Nick Dragotta! An astonishing new version of DC's iconic characters is here! In the Absolute Universe, familiar heroes have been reinvented from the ground up with origin stories that completely reshape both their abilities and their circumstances but maintain the core characteristics that fans have known and loved for decades! Bruce Wayne comes from nothing. He's not the scion of a wealthy empire in Gotham City, he's the son of a public school teacher who he experienced the unimaginable horror of random gun violence as a child, changing the trajectory of his life forever. With no limitless resources, no billions to fund him, no mansion, and no butler to care for him, Bruce has shaped himself into an entirely different breed of Batman, one that is equal parts brain and brawn, who exists exclusively in the grittiest and most underserved parts of Gotham with no high society mask to fall back on.

Always up for a twist on not just the Batman's origins, but the foundations of the character itself.
In some ways the pattern is the same, the tragic loss of a parent though gun violence, the intensive period of training, skulking through the night in costume.
And in many other ways it is not : Bruce comes from a working class background, an engineer in the light of day, Matha Wayne lives, 1/?

Robotswithpersonality 2/? and plays an active role in the story, there are familiar faces from the classic rogue's gallery in very different circumstances, Alfred Pennyworth is around, but introduced in a VERY different manner. There are other familiar faces from the classic allies list that also end up in slightly different roles.
This one doesn't hold back on a familiarly grim take on Gotham:

Robotswithpersonality 3/? crime and violence and corruption running rampant, but that is the perfect foil for a Batman of any origins to make his mark.
What I love is the intersplicing of three timelines throughout the five issues collected in this first volume: moments prior to the tragic event that set Bruce on his path, so you see who he was and what potential he held, moments soon after, where he's still a child and working though nightmares,
2w
Robotswithpersonality 4/? grief and thoughts of vengeance, talking with friends and his mom, seeking hope -alongside glimpses of the first efforts as the Bat; and the 'current day' storyline where we see Wayne and others struggle to do good, against the odds, against the threats and temptations, the coercive powers attempting to rule from the shadows.
It hooked me enough that I'm both very happy with where the first volume ended and eager to read the next.

Robotswithpersonality 5/5 Looks like it's continuing in single issues with the next bunch to be collected in Volume 2 in 2026. I'll admit with stories that get this violent and gritty, I don't mind the downtime between volumes. 💁🏼‍♂️ 2w

I'm so impressed with this, even with all the hype. Snyder took a few years away from DC to work on creator-owned comics and he's clearly reinvigorated. I love the idea of a contemporary, working class Bruce Wayne who is fighting a corrupt system. Snyder gets that Batman's rogues gallery could just as easily be his buddies under different circumstances. Dragotta is truly in his element, squeezing every ounce of action into even the tiniest panels.

A solid start to a new Batman. Exciting twists on familiar characters, but still the same Dark Knight.

Absolute Batman punts the bad guy's kid and I'm here for it 😅 😅 😅

I'm not sure how long the “Absolute“ title will hang around, but I'm enjoying this alternative Batman.

15 years after reinventing Batman, Scott Snyder is back at it [checks notes] reinventing Batman. Nick Dragotta's art is hyper-kinetic.
