The Swarm
The Swarm: A Novel | Frank Schatzing
Whales begin sinking ships. Toxic, eyeless crabs poison Long Island's water supply. The North Sea shelf collapses, killing thousands in Europe. Around the world, countries are beginning to feel the effects of the ocean's revenge as the seas and their inhabitants begin a violent revolution against mankind. At stake is the survival of the Earth's fragile ecologyand ultimately, the survival of the human race itself. The apocalyptic catastrophes of The Day After Tomorrow meet the watery menace of The Abyss in this gripping, scientifically realistic, and utterly imaginative thriller.

At 898 pages, this book is a chunkster.

Reading this, I am seriously freaked out about the ocean. This book supposes there is an intelligence living in the ocean, and it is fed up with humans treating the oceans and its inhabitants so poorly. Named the Yrr, they are on a mission to destroy all humans and restore order to the deep. This seems like something that could possibly happen. The book was well written.

I started this chunkster this weekend. I like it so far, but at 898 pages it‘s very hard to hold.

BarbaraBB So glad you‘re reading it. It deserves to be read! So good!! 1y

Alright. Here it is, lain out in front of your intelligent human eyes: you are nothing. Humanity is nothing but a bunch of self-absorbed particles who have the impudence of destroying their own planet.
An enthralling, almost journalistic read, which sucks you into a world not so far fetched from our own.

BarbaraBB I loved this book! Scary too! 2y

Against all odds (wind and very similar experiences on my side) I made it. A friend of mine told me she was not able to finish it because it got worse and worse in sense of things happening. And I have to admit I was on the tip of putting it away at some points because I could not cope with what was happening. But I‘m glad I did not. This is a very disturbing yet intersting novel based on the science. #theswarm #frankschatzing

Spending some time at the beach - still reading The Swarm. This book frightens me a lot talking about stuff I experienced like whale watching (I worked on a whale watching zodiac for a month) and the Suez canal (you can see it in the back). I am on page 500 and I do not know if I want to go on. #theswarm #derschwarm #frankschatzing

Cinfhen So jealous to see a beach photo 😁Enjoy 🏖 4y
erzascarletbookgasm I miss the beach! 😩 Oh, you enjoy! 🌞 🌊 4y
MariaW @Cinfhen @erzascarletbookgasm I am not sure if I can enjoy the beach anymore while reading The Swarm. I am expecting an army of crabs entering the beach any moment now. 😱 4y

In times of Corona I sometimes send my parents books I think they like. My father asked me to order Stewart O‘Nan for him, so I added the Swarm. I think he will appreciate it very much since he is a nature-loving guy.
My mother received „Secret Lives of Great Artists: What Your Teachers Never Told You About Master Painter and Sculptors“ (which I saw on Litsy) two weeks ago and liked it.

Gooooooood morning Cairo (and Monday morning 🙈). With fresh foccacio and chocolate chip cookies (both still warm) and a good read making it easier to dive into a new working day. 🤗🤗🤗

Started to read this one during Corona-times. The Earth starts to get rid of humankind itself - reminds me of something going on right now.... ?
And it has been on my reading list forever. #derschwarm #theswarm #frankschätzing #frankschatzing

Maike I remember it having some really slow moments, but it‘s really worth the effort! 😊 5y

MariaW @Maike I was shocked by the huge amount of pages at first. 🙈 5y

I was gifted The Swarm by a dear friend (after it took her years to read!). When I opened it, I found this drawing and started cracking up. Our conversation followed:

Me: this is a game?! This looks so fun!
Friend: Jess, you‘ve played before... you were just a littttle drunk
Me: *incredibly embarrassed* OH.

The hot mess strikes again. #usedbookfinds

HLouiseM That‘s one of my favorite games! 6y

1. I wouldn't read it on the beach, but The Swarm was a great ocean book.
2. Favorite sea creature? OMG I can't choose. I'd really love to see a whale shark.
3. My favorite beaches have all been in the Caribbean, I love that warm water.

Happy Monday! Now to stay awake at my desk.... thanks @JoScho !

What a trip, this book. A page turner from the first page on. It is a thriller unlike any other I ever read. It is an eco-thriller with a lot of biological and ecological facts. It is the story about the mystery of how the oceans and its inhabitants suddenly seem to take revenge for all the oil and gas we took from it and all the debris we dumped in it. It is the story about Yrr. Read it! #1001books

This book immediately comes to mind when I think of #couldntputitdown. It's been a long time since I've read this unique environmental thriller but I still remember how I raced through it. The idea for this book was so gripping, it took me 2 pages to get completely hooked. I remember yelling at my lovely husband to READ FASTER (yes, my husband reads to me. And near me. He's awesome!) because I couldn't bear the suspense 😬😬😬
