Dune: The Butlerian Jihad
Dune: The Butlerian Jihad | Kevin J. Anderson, Brian Herbert
13 posts | 14 read | 2 reading | 5 to read
Frank Herbert's Dune series is one of the grandest epics in the annals of imaginative literature. Selling millions of copies worldwide, it is science fiction's answer to The Lord of the Rings, a brilliantly imaginative epic of high adventure, unforgettable characters, and immense scope. Decades after Herbert's original novels, the Dune saga was continued by Frank Herbert's son, Brian Herbert, an acclaimed SF novelist in his own right, in collaboration with Kevin J. Anderson. Their New York Times bestselling trilogy, Dune: House Atreides, Dune: House Harkonnen, and Dune: House Corrino, formed a prequel to the classic Herbert series that was acclaimed by reviewers and readers alike. Now Herbert and Anderson, working from Frank Herbert's own notes, reveal a pivotal epoch in the history of the Dune universe, the chapter of the saga most eagerly anticipated by readers: The Butlerian Jihad. Throughout the Dune novels, Frank Herbert frequently referred to the long-ago war in which humans wrested their freedom from "thinking machines." Now, in Dune: Butlerian Jihad, Brian Herbert and Kevin J. Anderson bring to life the story of that war, a tale previously seen only in tantalizing hints and clues. Finally, we see how Serena Butler's passionate grief ignites the war that will liberate humans from their machine masters. We learn the circumstances of the betrayal that made mortal enemies of House Atreides and House Harkonnen; and we experience the Battle of Corrin that created a galactic empire that lasted until the reign of Emperor Shaddam IV. Herein are the foundations of the Bene Gesserit Sisterhood, the Suk Doctors, the Order of Mentats, and the mysteriously altered Navigators of the Spacing Guild. Here is the amazing tale of the Zensunni Wanderers, who escape bondage to flee to the desert world where they will declare themselves the Free Men of Dune. And here is the backward, nearly forgotten planet of Arrakis, where traders have discovered the remarkable properties of the spice melange . . . . Ten thousand years before the events of Dune, humans have managed to battle the remorseless Machines to a standstill . . . but victory may be short-lived. Yet amid shortsighted squabbling between nobles, new leaders have begun to emerge. Among them are Xavier Harkonnen, military leader of the Planet of Salusa Secundus; Xavier's fiance, Serena Butler, an activist who will become the unwilling leader of millions; and Tio Holtzman, the scientist struggling to devise a weapon that will help the human cause. Against the brute efficiency of their adversaries, these leaders and the human race have only imagination, compassion, and the capacity for love. It will have to be enough. Pickpick

I find the Dune books written by Kevin J. Anderson and Brian Herbert to be way more readable than those written by Frank Herbert. This isn‘t said to dis‘ Frank. Instead, I say this to praise Kevin and Brian. This duo brings the Dune universe completely to life, giving us a flourishing backdrop against which we may better understand Frank‘s masterpieces. I do consider this one to be a “must read,” without which much of the epic tale is lost.

I feel that this book has a very large plothole. Holtzmann has to use teams of math-solving slaves to carry out calculations on a planet where computers are banned due to the threat of thinking machines. However, they seem to have no issue with spaceships, which surely require powerful computational components, and with electronics-based weaponry. I've never seen a Raspberry Pi revolt and try to usurp power.

I just loved this book that brought me back to Dune universe I enjoyed so much in my teens. I will read the original books again as soon as I get to them (I'm reading in chronological order). If you haven't Frank Herbert's books I think it would be a good idea starting by his son and Anderson's books. #Sha2017 #SciFi

BiblioNyan There‘s spoilers later down the line for the original Dune saga. And you definitely DON‘T want to read Hunters of Dune & Sandworms of Dune until after you‘ve read Chapterhouse Dune as the duology is conclusion to the whole saga. :) 6y
Sha0102 @Bibli0.Nyan I intend to read in this order: http://www.dunenovels.com/articles/tags-blog/chronology Do you think this is ok? Sorry I did not understand exactly what you said about spoilers 😣 Thanks! 6y
BiblioNyan @Sha0102 Yes!! The only one not listed is Sandworms of Dune, which should be read after Hunters of Dune; it‘s the conclusion book in the saga. 6y
Sha0102 @Bibli0.Nyan Yay! Thanks for the tips!!! ❤ 6y

I'm about 50% of the way thru this with Sir Betrothed. It has been really fun seeing his reactions and hearing his theories on the story. He's actually got quite a lot of it right on the nail, I'm so impressed!!

Sha0102 Gosh I didn't know his son was writting prequels and sequels! 😱 Gotta read them all. 7y
BiblioNyan @Sha0102 Yes! Along with Kevin J Anderson. There's the Legenda of Dune (takes place 10,000 before Dune), followed by The Prequels of Dune (about 50-100 years before Dune), then Schools of Dune which discusses establishment of Bene Gesserit and the Mentats. So far only 2 books in that series. 😃😃 7y
Sha0102 @Bibli0.Nyan I'll be lookjng for these books tomorrow!! Thanks for the info!! 🤗 7y

Making Sir Betrothed read through these trilogies. When he started talking about the book, I knew I had to do a read along! These are some of my all-time favourite #SFF books!

This trilogy takes place 10,000 years prior to the events of #Dune by Frank Herbert. Wonderful added layers of history & lore to an already immensely meticulous & phenomenally imaginative universe!
