#JudgedByItsCover This autobiography, by a 13th-century Imperial Japanese concubine, was pretty much forgotten about soon after it was written. A single copy survived the centuries and was rediscovered in the 1940s. Lady Nijo was a mistress from the age of twelve, had love affairs with several royal family members and ended up becoming a wandering Buddhist nun. Wow. #MarchIntoReading

quirkyreader If my memory serves, there was a film based on this memoir. I think Tosihero Mifune(sp ?) was in it. I saw it years ago when the library was downsizing its VHS collection. 8y
LauraBrook This sounds amazing! Have always had a fascination with the time period and culture. Sounds a bit like Raise the Red Lantern, which I used to have on VHS! 8y

Pickpick

Fascinating insight into life at the imperial court of a retired emperor during the Kamakura period. Nijo was an amazing woman.
