I had one of those moments today when I remembered why I became an English teacher. I introduced Kurt Vonnegut to freshmen today. They read Harrison Bergeron and asked me for MORE to read. They wanted to talk about it for the rest of class. Their minds were blown. I nearly cried, you guys.

I just had to share because I know that Littens will understand. 💕🤗

TNG #ComingOfAge 1.19 This episode is a precursor to Conspiracy, but that story never got anywhere. There is a lot of tension and the crew's frustration at the investigation for unspecified wrongdoings is palpable. Wesley's B-plot of the Academy entrance exam is ok, but fellow candidate T'Shanik was an adorable, non-binary Vulcan and I wanted to see them again.

The only exam story I can think of is Harrison Bergeron.

rretzler This is my favorite short story! I love Harrison Bergeron. I think it should be required reading (and contemplating) for everyone!!!💕 6y
tournevis @rretzler I agree 100%! The original short story has aged, though, and it's been retold so many times in many ways, so I'm incertain which version would be best for today. 6y
CindyMyLifeIsLit There‘s a short film version called “2081” that is really good! I showed it to my students this year. (edited) 6y

Megabooks I disliked the other candidate, curly-haired white girl. She was so obsequious towards Wesley. “Oh, how did I get here? Wow! You‘re on a starship?! Can I touch your biceps?” 🤩🤩😒 As an adult, that just feels sexist. I realize they‘re teenagers, but seriously. Maybe I just don‘t get it because I‘m ace. 🤷🏻‍♀️🤷🏻‍♀️ 6y
tournevis @Megabooks No, you got it. She was very badly written. 5y
tournevis @CindyMyLifeIsLit There are many versions, including a quite good one from the 1990s Twilight Zone. 5y

Pickpick

Read this out loud with my family today. Quick read at about 6 pages.

Here, Vonnegut played around with ideas like: equal isn't the same as fair + suppressing talents or skills to prevent competition among the people. There is irony. There are ideas about big government. It is slightly dark + a little creepy, but great for open ended discussion. 😉

Pickpick

Creepy look at what "could happen", especially as we see our government strip away rights and privileges. While not a favorite story, definitely worth reading if only to open your mind.
