The Complete Polysyllabic Spree
The Complete Polysyllabic Spree | Nick Hornby
10 posts | 13 read | 14 to read
In his monthly accounts of what he's read along with what he may one day read Nick Hornby brilliantly explores everything from the classic to the graphic novel, as well as poems, plays, sports books and other kinds of non-fiction. If he occasionally implores a biographer for brevity, or abandons a literary work in favour of an Arsenal match, then all is not lost. His writing, full of all the joy and surprise and despair that books bring him, reveals why we still read, even when there's football on TV, a pram in the hall or a good band playing at our local pub.

Day 16: Current book quote
"So this is supposed to be about the how, and when, and why, and what of reading -- about the way that, when reading is going well, one book leads to another and to another... when it's going badly, when books don't stick or take, when your mood and the mood of the book are fighting like cats, you'd rather do anything but attempt the next paragraph, or reread the last one for the tenth time." #ReadingResolutions @jess7

Ruthiella Are you liking this book ? I thought it was very entertaining. It made me laugh out loud multiple times 😀 6y

I like Mr Hornby, though I don't know much about him aside from these essays and reading About A Boy way back when. This was my "read at work" book for a couple of months. They were the perfect thing to leave at the drop of a hat and pick up again in a week or so without missing a beat. I'll always enjoy reading about others' various reading habits. A pick, though not an overly enthusiastic one.

Just a few minutes of sneaky reading until my client arrives!

Also, I may have requested 9 @sarahmaclean recommended romance novels from PaperBackSwap before I left for work this afternoon. 😳😊

This book is a lot of fun! It does exactly what it says and, of course, Hornby injects a decent amount of humour into the proceedings, my only complaint would be when he buys a book you adore and never reads it but what can you do? Lovely quick read with some very interesting recommendations

Abailliekaras I love this book! Especially his advice not to persevere if you're not enjoying a book. 😊 7y
Reviewsbylola I love this series. I hope he publishes another one. 7y

I definitely told everyone to read 'Gilead' when I posted a review but I reckon I missed, or failed to put it so brilliantly, as to why it is an amazing book about religion and proof that Robinson is exceptionally talented and smart

cathysaid That is a fabulous description, and spot on! 7y
Suet624 I loved his other book about books. I haven't read this one and now I think I'll have to check it out! 7y
mrsthilkey Do you think a non-Christian would enjoy Gilead? I've never read Robinson, I would like to try something of hers. 7y
smccallum @mrsthilkey absolutely! I am very firmly atheist and adored Gilead as well as her non-fiction, Christianity is very much at the heart of both of these but she writes in a way that isn't irritating, it's hard to explain unless you're Nick Hornby :') 7y
mrsthilkey @smccallum That's great to hear, I was afraid my being an atheist would color my opinion of her books. I will be adding to my TBR list immediately! 7y

As someone who went to more than 1 Polyphonic Spree gig back in "the day" (you know the day before kids and mortgages) this title really dates the book... not that this is necessarily a bad thing, it's just taken me back to uni, pound a pint nights and lay ins...
