Earthrise | M C a Hogarth

Reese Eddings has enough to do just keeping her rattletrap merchant vessel, the TMS Earthrise, profitable enough to pay food for herself and her micro-crew. So when a mysterious benefactor from her past shows up demanding she rescue a man from slavers, her first reaction is to say "NO!" And then to remember that she sort of promised to repay the loan. But she doesn't remember signing up to tangle with pirates and slavers over a space elf prince... Book 1 of the Her Instruments trilogy is a rollicking space operatic adventure set in the Pelted Paradox universe.

In debt to a mysterious patron, Captain Eddings is tasked with rescuing an alien spy. In doing so, she finds herself tangled up with drug dealers, pirates, and an interplanetary police force.

Found family in space is so my wheelhouse it‘s not even funny. Multiple different aliens, mysteries, diversity, fun, all good. But, I disliked the MC‘s overdone cruelty to another character, which feels like weak setup for enemies to lovers trope. 🌕🌕🌕🌕🌑

If you like SF about scrappy starship crews who become a family, you've gotta check this out. It was a slower read than I expected, but the character dynamics and the worldbuilding were so good I didn't mind the time I spent with it. Even better, there are three more books about this crew! Hurray!

I think it MIGHT always be free on Amazon, too. That's the case right now, in mid-December 2018.

TW for miscarriage and consensual sibling incest.

I brought Casey home this afternoon (!!!!!!) and quickly discovered he's too much of a chow hound to allow anyone to eat on the couch. I abandoned my trashy TV plans and read more of EARTHRISE while I ate my lunch.

emtobiasz Happy gotcha day to Casey! 🎉 6y
xicanti @emtobiasz thank you! 6y
rockpools I had to scroll back to meet Casey. He‘s adorable! Have fun! 🐶 6y

I went on a mini Cook Street Village beverage crawl this afternoon, starting with a Fog Nog at Moka Coffee and ending with a cookies & cream shake at Big Wheel Burger, where they use chocolate chip cookies instead of Oreos. Yum.

I'm also very much enjoying EARTHRISE, a book I downloaded when it was free mumblemumble years ago. I've got the rest of the series on La TBR too thanks to a $2.99 omnibus promo, and I'm determined to finish it this year.

AlaMich Wow. Cookies and cream with chocolate chip cookies sounds like something I need to have in my life pronto! 6y
xicanti @AlaMich it's amazing! They smush up their house-made soft cookies and blend them in. 6y
AlaMich @xicanti but they leave some chunks, right? It‘s not all pulverized? *she said anxiously, as if she could beam herself from Chicago to Canada instantly* 😆 6y
xicanti @AlaMich yep, there's enough chunks that sometimes the straw gets clogged and you've gotta pull it out and suck on the bottom. 6y

Got this on loan from a friend. I've been looking to break up all the political education, and I can't think of a better way than to get back into Fantasy/Sci-Fi. So far so good!
