#1MoreScaryStory An even scarier story involved the schoolyard bully, drawing balls on all the cat-bats. 😹 South Park was just newly popular in '98. Sebastian once targeted me for a WWE wrestling punching bag, leading to my mother calling the police.. I can forgive the guy by now.. His attacks on me and others did get him expelled.

@TheReadingMermaid #1MoreScaryStory 👻 I have the first 2 books in the 3 set collection. They sure were my most read at the school library, becoming mine as old discards. The librarian saved them for me!

BeansPage So jealous. Mine were lost over time so I only have the treasury edition now. 6y
Dan_SpiderCrafts I imagine the original 3rd is going to be rare for me to find. The newer reprint editions now have changed the illustrations to be less scary. 😜 Cool to see the Treasury Books coming back! 6y
LeslieO Stephen Gammell is one of my favorite illustrators. 6y
Blaire Love that the librarian saved them for you. 6y

Guillermo del Toro is set to do either a movie or a mini series about this book series. what are your thoughts on this? Do you think it will be a good idea to put these things on the screen? Do you think that small stories like this can translate to the big screen? Why or why not?

BookwormAHN I think a mini series could be quite entertaining 👻 6y
BeansPage @BookwormAHN do you think elements would be lost in the translation of the adaptation? Or do you think that he will be true to the Original Stories? 6y
BookwormAHN I think he could make it work. 6y

kellyann28 Mini series over a movie for this would work better I think. He's an amazing director so whatever he does will be great 6y
RadicalReader @TheReadingMermaid cannot wait best announcement of 2018!!! 6y
inthegreensandblues I'd like to see it as a series where they flesh out a story into say a 15 or 20 minute short. But I'm sure there are other ways of doing it that would be good too. I'll definitely be putting it on my watch list! 6y
BeansPage @BookwormAHN @kellyann28 @RadicalReader @inthegreensandblues how do you guys think the artwork will translate onto the big screen? Do you think they'll stay true to the book on that? 6y
kellyann28 @TheReadingMermaid With how old those books are there's no reason why they couldn't stay true to the artwork with all the available technology out there. I can definitely see them "adding" or enhancing it for the big screen production though. 6y
BookwormAHN Some of the CGI in Mama and the Babadook reminded me of the artwork from Scary Stories, so I think it could work. 6y
inthegreensandblues That would awesome if they use the original artwork, but at the very least I hope that they just stay true to the style in that the atmosphere should be very creepy and make you shudder from the visuals alone. 6y
RadicalReader @TheReadingMermaid I would hope so it is what is the cherry on top of the stories 6y

The illustrations in this book series is iconic and helped gain the series its popularity and classic status. Which illustration is your favorite? Why is it your favorite tell us about it...

RadicalReader @TheReadingMermaid my favorite illustration is the one for Sam‘s new pet my favorite story too 6y
BookwormAHN My favorite is the cat/bat creature that divided the sections in Book 2 👻 6y
inthegreensandblues The art is amazing and creepy and I remembered it though the years better than the actual stories. The corpse woman from The Haunted House (also on the cover of the treasury edition) is pretty scary. I also love the one for Oh Susannah (vol 2) which is like a nightmare dreamscape. 6y
See All 6 Comments
BeansPage @inthegreensandblues oh I love the one from Oh Susanna! My favorite one is from the story Is There Something Wrong from volume 3. I just found that huge headed monster to be really super creepy and the fact that it looks like the guy is walking it like a dog makes it even more like WTF and scary. 6y
inthegreensandblues @TheReadingMermaid Yes, the one with Is Something Wrong? would make a great framed print! 6y
inthegreensandblues @BookwormAHN Oh yes, the cat/bat creature is frightening! I love it when the artist does things like put one human foot on an animal. It's so wrong! Also the hint of the girl's body in the white dress on the hanger... 6y

So these stories are actually a collections of folklore and legends from all over the place. It is possible that you have heard these stories told more than once from more than one source. Have you ever heard any of these stories outside of the Scary Stories series? If so which ones?

BookwormAHN I saw a version of Maybe You Will Remember on the old TV show Fact or Fiction and supposedly it was fact. 6y
BeansPage @BookwormAHN really??? That would be interesting to know. 😳 6y
BookwormAHN Also Alligators reminded me loosely of The Blackwater Saga by Michael McDowell. 6y

inthegreensandblues I realize now that these books were my introduction to a lot of urban legends that I would hear over and over again. Like the babysitter story, the hook, and the stories of roadside ghosts, like in The Wreck. 6y
inthegreensandblues @BookwormAHN @TheReadingMermaid I have heard a more in depth version of Maybe You Will Remember sometime recently and can't recall where. Maybe it was an episode of Lore or another podcast? That is a really psychologically scary story! 6y
BeansPage @inthegreensandblues I think it could have been Lore actually. I think I remember the episode you're talking about. And yes that story is a mental mind f*ck for sure. 6y
Dan_SpiderCrafts I noticed some cartoon retellings, like the 90s show Freaky Stories. Several including The Hook, and Sam's New Pet renamed as Dog From Mexico. 6y

this was the one that scared me the most as a child. It's in book 3 of the series and it's called Harold. unlike the other stories which can be a bit corny at times this one seem to be a bit more graphic and in my opinion was more scary than most of the other stories.
What was yours?

jackilynn The Red Spot was always the one that freaked me out the most. I think my fear of spiders is a result of this story lol 6y
BeansPage @jackilynn OMG that one is unnerving!!! 6y
BookwormAHN The Babysitter used to freak me out. It seemed to plausible. And thanks to High Beams I always check my backseat before I get in the car 👻 6y
See All 9 Comments
BeansPage @BookwormAHN I totally check my backseat too! Every time I get in and especially if it's dark! 6y
inthegreensandblues Harold is definitely one of the scariest ones! I was also disturbed by The Drum (Vol. 2). Mother leaving is one thing but the "new mother" - wtf?! ? 6y
inthegreensandblues Oh yeah and I also have always remembered High Beams and checked the backseat! 6y
inthegreensandblues On this current read, I enjoyedThe Guests (Vol. 1) than I remember as a kid. Maybe because I've read more fantasy now and like things like weird time slips and/or parallel universe, as well as what we now might "glitch in the matrix." 6y
inthegreensandblues I also want to share: The Bed By the Window is super depressing and I thought that when I was a kid too. 😢 6y
Dan_SpiderCrafts The Vol. 1 "Me Tie Dough-ty Walker!" was the strangest and scariest for me. ? Imagining the weird tension of the dog suddenly singing back, while the boy panics and tries to keep things quietly hidden from the haunted horror approaching. 6y

So there are three books in this series and I was just wondering what everybody's favorite book as a whole was... Tell us more about your favorite pic and why you picked it.

RadicalReader @TheReadingMermaid I loved all three books especially listening to them CD 6y
BookwormAHN I also really liked all three 👻 6y
inthegreensandblues I don't think I can pick one, I know that I loved all three books as a kid. Now I don't have my original books (they're probably in a box in my parents basement? 🤷) but I bought the treasury edition a few years ago at a garage sale and like having them in one book since they're jumbled in my memory anyway. 6y
