Guillermo del Toro Cabinet of Curiosities
Guillermo del Toro Cabinet of Curiosities: My Notebooks, Collections, and Other Obsessions | Guillermo Del Toro, Marc Zicree
9 posts | 5 read | 13 to read
Over the last two decades, writer-director Guillermo del Toro has mapped out a territory in the popular imagination that is uniquely his own, astonishing audiences with Cronos, Hellboy, Pan's Labyrinth, and a host of other films and creative endeavors. Now, for the first time, del Toro reveals the inspirations behind his signature artistic motifs, sharing the contents of his personal notebooks, collections, and other obsessions. The result is a startling, intimate glimpse into the life and mind of one of the world's most creative visionaries. Complete with running commentary, interview text, and annotations that contextualize the ample visual material, this deluxe compendium is every bit as inspired as del Toro is himself.Contains a foreword by James Cameron, an afterword by Tom Cruise, and contributions from other luminaries, including Neil Gaiman and John Landis, among others.

Slightly book related, as several stories in the 8 episode season are based off of short stories including back to back adaptations of Lovecraft, I just finished Del Toro's anthology series & have a few thoughts. I love that he introduces each episode, keeping with the tradition of shows like Hitchcock Presents & Twilight Zone. The roster of directorial talent is impressive, as is that of the actors. However the episodes themselves I found (cont)

vivastory to be a tad uneven, although there were def more highs than lows. Fave episodes: #2 (Graveyard Rats about a grave robber in need of money. Learning of a particularly valuable corpse he follows it no matter where it goes. This one made me squirm.) #4 (The Outside. I fucking loved this one. A banker/housewife/outsider starts using lotion despite the alarming allergic reaction in this highly stylized episode.) #7 (The Viewing. This was like a (cont) 13mo
vivastory late 70s movie filled with a strange ensemble gathered for a mysterious purpose, high on drugs & synth music until the bizarre final few minutes.) 13mo
RedCurly I did not like the #7 episode at all. It was pointless to me. But I really liked this show. 13mo

vivastory @RedCurly I really appreciate movies/ tv episodes that veer off into the unexpected & that is what the 7th episode provided for me. I had no idea where it was heading. I really enjoyed the series overall & thought it ended on a great note (I 💙 Jennifer Kent) 13mo
RedCurly @vivastory I am glad you enjoyed it :) 13mo
The_Book_Ninja Hit and miss but gloriously made 13mo
Aimeesue Nice review! I love when they do the presenter intros à la Hitchcock and Masterpiece Theater. Does Del Toro do cameos in any of them? That was always my favorite part of Hitchcock's movies, although I don't think he did any for the series. 13mo
vivastory @Aimeesue He didn't have any cameos unfortunately. I'm making my way through Hitchcock Presents at the moment. I'm almost finished with season 2 & he hasn't made an appearance in an episode. 13mo
vivastory @The_Book_Ninja Definitely hit & miss. More hits than misses for me, & yes great production throughout. 13mo
dylanisreading I need to finish watching this. 13mo
Twainy This is on my short list of shows to watch. 13mo
TieDyeDude We've been taking our time with this. Watched 1-6. I think episode 5 is the only one that's been underwhelming. We weren't expecting a straight Lovecraft tale (bleak, slow burn descent into madness). Love the concept and execution of the series, though! 13mo
vivastory @TieDyeDude I am honestly baffled why they adapted Pickman's Model when it is one of Lovecraft's least interesting stories 13mo

Guillermo del Toro is set to do either a movie or a mini series about this book series. what are your thoughts on this? Do you think it will be a good idea to put these things on the screen? Do you think that small stories like this can translate to the big screen? Why or why not?

BookwormAHN I think a mini series could be quite entertaining 👻 5y
BeansPage @BookwormAHN do you think elements would be lost in the translation of the adaptation? Or do you think that he will be true to the Original Stories? 5y
BookwormAHN I think he could make it work. 5y

kellyann28 Mini series over a movie for this would work better I think. He's an amazing director so whatever he does will be great 5y
RadicalReader @TheReadingMermaid cannot wait best announcement of 2018!!! 5y
inthegreensandblues I'd like to see it as a series where they flesh out a story into say a 15 or 20 minute short. But I'm sure there are other ways of doing it that would be good too. I'll definitely be putting it on my watch list! 5y
BeansPage @BookwormAHN @kellyann28 @RadicalReader @inthegreensandblues how do you guys think the artwork will translate onto the big screen? Do you think they'll stay true to the book on that? 5y
kellyann28 @TheReadingMermaid With how old those books are there's no reason why they couldn't stay true to the artwork with all the available technology out there. I can definitely see them "adding" or enhancing it for the big screen production though. 5y
BookwormAHN Some of the CGI in Mama and the Babadook reminded me of the artwork from Scary Stories, so I think it could work. 5y
inthegreensandblues That would awesome if they use the original artwork, but at the very least I hope that they just stay true to the style in that the atmosphere should be very creepy and make you shudder from the visuals alone. 5y
RadicalReader @TheReadingMermaid I would hope so it is what is the cherry on top of the stories 5y

My family gave me this fantastic stack of books and Labyrinth Funko Pops for Christmas. I'm really excited to dig into these. Fortunately, I don't have to be back at work until January 3rd so I have some time.

I also got two Barnes and Noble gift cards and one Amazon gift card. The people in my life know what I want most...books, bookish items, and the means to get more books and bookish items 😄
