Dryly academic in style, this work proposes some interesting ideas. But like the cartoon above, there were many places where Singley leaps from a supported point to an assumed conclusion that isn‘t convincingly argued, in my opinion. It took way too long to read (and I almost bailed several times) but it did make me think about the novels we‘ve read. #whartonbuddyread @Graywacke

Graywacke Great comic. I‘m glad the sloggy book rewarded. I‘ve been thinking over all our Wharton reading. 3w
Lcsmcat @Graywacke She (Singley) would do things like say in her letter to so-and-so she said she was reading X at the same time she was writing Y, and therefore Y expounded on X‘s theory. 🙄 Or, because a book was in her library she assumed Wharton agreed with what was in it. And (personal issue for me) she trashed the Episcopal church while simultaneously using Episcopal/Episcopalian incorrectly. Horrors! (edited) 3w
Graywacke @Lcsmcat ok, the last bit made me smile. And, yes, that‘s a lot of careless or manipulative assumptions. 3w

I found the (40 page!) introduction a bit dry and academic, so I‘m not sure if I‘ll make it through this or not. But it‘s an intriguing look at Wharton‘s work through a lens of spiritual seeking (rather than “manners”) We‘ll see if I make it. #whartonbuddyread @Graywacke

Banned for its lewd, obscene, and pornographic content, Henry Miller's journals of 1920's-1930's Bohemian Paris certainly can be seen as subversive literature. His work as raw, unapologetic, unfiltered, and certainly un-PC for its time, shocking and repulsing in reference to the numerous morally corrupt characters he encounters. Overall, Miller is a literary, epiphanic writer but sluggish with his frenetic ramblings and glacial storytelling.

I just received an email from LOA about a documentary about Gary Snyder, one of the last surviving Beats, & a character in one of the grimmest novels I have ever read in my life (Kerouac's Big Sur). This will be streaming this weekend. Think this will be of interest to you @leftcoastzen

I finished 13 books in March. Lots of middle grade and graphic novels, because that‘s all I could mentally handle. The Spear Cuts Through Water was my favorite, even though it took me two months to read. It was so worth the effort. Both of the Swifts books by Beth Lincoln were delightful. #marchwrapup

I‘m really hoping that the #bookspin gods are kind to me and pick books that are already on my March TBR. Between library books with due dates that can‘t be extended, books clubs/buddy reads, NetGalley books that publish this month, and my library system‘s annual Community Reads program, my schedule is already packed. In fact, looking at this makes me so stressed, I may bail on everything and just watch Netflix. 😂

There‘s something stingy and mean in this collection, characters putting up barriers in self-preservation mode. But a few lovely ones: tender tourist in Hyderabad, urban tent housing vs. luxury safari tents, sentimental AI in Mall of America, Paul Yoon‘s mini-epic “Valley of the Moon,” Lori Ostlund‘s bubble family in “Just Another Family.” Preferred 2023 collection edited by Min Jin Lee. 2024
