It‘s February #AuthorAMonth readers. This month we‘ll be celebrating Roxane Gay. What are you planning to read?

I haven‘t gotten to this year‘s Google form yet. I will try to do that by my mid month post so you can start recording what you‘ve read. In the meantime, if you use StoryGraph here‘s the link to the challenge there:

Kitta I read Hunger last year and wow. So good but so hard to read. I‘d recommend it a lot to anyone doing the challenge, however major trigger warnings for rape, eating disorder, and fatphobia. 5h

#AuthorAMonth I tried to listen to this but I just couldn‘t. Things I liked about this book are that Lord Peter is a book lover, his mother doesn‘t think his hobby is inappropriate, he has a “Jeeves”-type character who helps him. Things I didn‘t like are that he behaves like solving crimes is all a lark, cheerfully going to the house where the body was found and joyfully disturbing the crime scene. And he rhymes, rhymes about murder. As I (cont)⬇️

CatLass007 began writing this review I considered that if he were on the Spectrum, rhyming might be a coping mechanism. But I didn‘t get a Spectrum vibe, although I‘m no expert. #HailTheBail (edited) 19h
dabbe The anti-semitism was awful, too. #hailthebail! #betterbooksahead 🤩 18h
charl08 Wow, that is the worst Wimsey cover I've seen. So wrong! 18h

Soubhiville Ha, this is the first I‘m hearing about the rhyming. That would turn me off too. 18h
CatLass007 @dabbe Yes, it was. I forgot to mention that. It really, really was. 17h
CatLass007 @charl08 I like to read a series in order but it wasn‘t available on LIBBY for weeks, so I bought it from Audible for $1.37. Never having read any of the series before, I didn‘t really know anything about what the cover should look like. But we all know never to judge a book by its cover.😊😜 17h

Pickpick

No murder but Lord Wimsey trusts his gut and investigates anyway. He finds motive and countless suspicious circumstances but no evidence of murder, until another person dies. And no evidence that it was murder. The hint of racism appears again and that turned me off quite a bit so that I won‘t continue the series. Saved, just barely, by some instances of lol humor and a nice analysis of how changes in laws create motives for murder. #authoramonth

Read for #AuthorAMonth #DorothySayers this was my first experience with Lord Peter Wimsey & first Sayers book. I listened to this one on audio & mostly in the car running errands & found it entertaining overall, more impressive that it was her first novel. It‘s dated, at times racist & classist but I liked the main character & supporting characters & might pick up another in the series at some point.⬇️

DebinHawaii I don‘t know if the audiobook aided or lowered my soft pick rating (it was fine, not outstanding) so I may try another in print. 🤷🏻‍♀️ 3d

charl08 For my money they definitely get better as she developed the characters in the series (but I am probably biased!) 3d
DebinHawaii @charl08 Good to know! I‘ll try another. 3d

I read the Lord Peter Windy books years ago loved them all! This time I thought I‘d start at the beginning and read the first in the series. Honestly, I thoroughly enjoyed reading this, but Busman‘s Honeymoon is still my favorite. Also, this time I seemed to notice more the prejudices of the time. Read for #authoramonth

Bklover Oh, and I had to switch from audio to the book because I thought the audio was awful. But maybe that‘s just me. 🤨 5d
Ruthiella I read most of the Lord Peter books in the ‘80s and enjoyed them. Like you, it‘s only upon re-reading that I notice the racism. 5d

Mehso-so

I‘ve barely heard of Dorothy Sayers, so I thought I‘d try out the #authoramonth challenge. What I thought would be a novelette turned out to be a BBC audio drama, which I think is good enough: the drama really brought the posh “cheerio/righty-ho/old boy” language to life. Murder isn‘t my favourite genre, and I found the plot hard to follow with so many characters, and couldn‘t honestly get engaged with many of them.

This is my 3rd Peter Wimsey novel (even though it's the 1st), and I can tell you that Sayers's novels get better in the series (THE NINE TAYLORS was superior to this one). Beware: the characters reflect the culture of their time, and some do express racial/anti-Semitic views. I low-pick it mostly because I adored Wimsey, whose foppish wit and slight arrogance reminded me of Percy Blakeney (aka The Scarlet Pimpernel).

CogsOfEncouragement I adore Harriet in this series. 6d
dabbe @CogsOfEncouragement She's not in this one, unfortunately. I think I'm going to have to find time to read this series. 🤩 6d
