When you're talking #BigInJapan, you must be taking about the King of Monsters himself

I have the audio but haven‘t gotten to it yet. It was a bestseller and a film in Japan. #biginjapan #wanderingjune

Cinfhen It was a quiet read... thought provoking 5y

Yayoi Kusama is one of the most significant contemporary artists at work today. She is #biginjapan and the rest of world. I was so pleased to have seen her Infinity Mirrors exhibition at the Seattle Art Museum #wanderingjune

Manga is big in Japan! This is the first one I read and it‘s super sweet. (Excuse the picture scooped from google - I‘m low on time as I‘m holidaying) Any reccs for more manga? - I definitely like the slice of life variety best.

xicanti YOTSUBA&! is great slice of life manga featuring an adventurous five-year-old and the adults who help her explore the world. It‘s got quite a different vibe than ORANGE, though. I always grin my way through each volume. 5y
Centique @xicanti excellent! Thanks for the tip. It sounds perfect. I will search it out. 5y
batsy I really enjoyed Emma, set in Victorian England. So absorbing and I took great pleasure in the detailed art. 5y

Centique @batsy this looks gorgeous. Will hunt it out too 😍 5y
Cinfhen Enjoy the hols 5y
BarbaraBB I‘ve never read one. Are they graphic novels? 5y
Lindy Slice of life are my favourite kind of manga. The series that I‘m caught up in at the moment also has elements of science fiction in modern Tokyo: 5y
Lindy Orange has been on my TBR for a while; I‘m moving it up in priority now. Another great slice of life manga: 5y
Lindy I also love this standalone: 5y
Lindy Another standalone: 5y
Lindy You might also like 5y
Lindy One last suggestion, a moody, heartfelt story about foster kids living in a group home: 5y
Centique @Lindy thank you SO MUCH. These look great! Stacking all of them 😍 5y
Lindy @Centique You‘re welcome 😇 5y
Centique @BarbaraBB sorry I seemed to have missed your question there Barbara! I think they can be anything from comics to larger graphic novels - but they are translated from Japanese and have a particular art style. They also read right to left so it takes a little to get into that reading pattern. 5y
BarbaraBB That is so interesting!! 5y

Haruki Maurakami I‘m sure is a big author in Japan, his home country.

rretzler Many people seem to love Murakami and I‘m not completely sure why at this point. I read his 1Q84 and while the premise was weird but interesting, at 1,332 pages, I found his writing very, very repetitive. I‘ve heard good things about Kafka on the Shore so I may try it and see if I like it any better. 5y
Cinfhen I‘m not sure Murakami is for me, but he‘s certainly #BigInJapan and the rest of the world 5y
CrowCAH @rretzler I wasn‘t a big fan of this book; too long and a bit confusing. 5y
CrowCAH @Cinfhen if you like chunksters and magic realism, then his books are for you. 5y
Cinfhen Nope, not for me!!! I don‘t enjoy magical realism 5y
